Mail Me Art 2
Mail Me Art is a British-based project, run by Darren Di Lieto, the
founder and co-editor of the illustration news portal the Little Chimp
Society. Over the course of a year, the first Mail Me Art project
brought together a vast collection of artistic work sent in the form of
mail by both professional and amateur artists of all ages from across
the world.
Mail Me Art culminated in the publication of the book Mail Me Art: Going Postal with the World’s Best Illustrators and Designers and the exhibition, held in London during April 2009.
Mail Me Art 2 is now up and running.
Mail Me Art 2 will run for around 6-8 months, with a signed copy of
the book plus an art-related prize given away each month to the artist
of our favourite submission. We are planning to propose a follow up
book, possibly called Mail Me More Art, and if we have half as many
submissions as the first Mail Me Art project did we will run another
exhibition. As with the first project, the artists will receive 70% of
the sale value, less any gallery fees incurred. Click here to see
photos from the Mail Me Art exhibition held in April 2009 in London. If you would like to take part in Mail Me Art 2, please click here for full details of how to submit your work.

HOW News This Week!
Lots of goings-on here at HOW HQ that you absolutely must know about!
• There's just two more days for you to submit your best interactive design work to this year's HOW Interactive Design Awards: B2B, consumer & self-promo websites, banners, motion design, games and more. Entry deadline is July 31, so get to it.
• Jessie posted yesterday about the early registration date for our In-HOWse Designer Conference, also July 31. Save $200 by signing up this week! Corporate creative managers, you can't miss this event -- you'll hear from in-house veterans Michael Lejeune, Stanley Hainesworth, Andy Epstein, Chris Pullman, riCardo Crespo and Jennifer Miller. (Together, they've worked for top-notch organizations: Mattel, Starbucks, LA County Metro, WGBH, CVS, Target, etc., etc.)
• Freelance designers, dig this: You can attend this year's Creative Freelance Conference in San Diego (August 26-28) for less than a grand. There's never been a better time to work on developing your freelance biz. Plus, we've added a payment plan and extended the Early-Bird discount to make it even easier for you to attend. Got a friend who freelances? Sweet! Refer a friend, and his/her registration is half off. (Then agree to split the discount.) Freelancers who attended last year raved about the conference--hear what they have to say.
• Design-firm principals/owners/leaders: This is THE year you should consider attending HOW's Mind Your Own Business Conference. As the economy picks up, you must be ideally positioned to take advantage of new clients and markets. Rethink how and why you run your business, working alongside other principals and speakers including Tim Williams, Emily Cohen, David Berman and Donna Karlin. Check out our MYOB group on LinkedIn.
• While you have your calendar open, be sure to put a star on September 1 -- that's the deadline to enter HOW's biggest competition, the International Design Awards. Find out more here.

Four Design Challenges
David Sherwin is working on a book for HOW and is looking for a few more contributors to feature:
I'm almost done with the first draft of the 80 Works book—which includes design solutions for almost 80 challenges. I say almost
because there are four challenges that have been attacked by a number
of designers... but it has fought the majority of them to a dead
standstill. Can you help me solve these challenges? It would be a great help, as
I'd really like to promote more of the amazing talents that are out
there in the design community. And thank you, in advance, if you'd like to participate. Contact me at dksherwin at msn dot com
if you want to take one of the following design problems on and
potentially get your solution into my upcoming book from HOW Design.
The deadline for completing the challenge is July 26, so don't wait!Posted by Megan Call for Entries | HOW Books

New HOW Design Competition!
I have ... let's see ... six posters in my tiny little office (including four from past HOW Design Conferences). I collect vintage posters at home ( see Wednesday, March 12 post). I [heart] posters. In fact, the winner of this year's International Design Awards was, you guessed it: a poster campaign. So we've decided to launch a design competition that spotlights my favorite kind of design project. (drumroll please ...) Here's the brand-new HOW Poster Design Awards. It's pretty slick: You can enter and upload your work entirely online. Judging panel is to be announced; the entry deadline is December 1. We'll profile the top 10 winners on HOWdesign.com. |

Threadless Loves Drawing
Community T-shirt site Threadless recently announced a call for entries for hand-drawn shirt designs. Some of the best designs begin as a simple hand-drawn sketch. Your challenge is to create an amazing tee based on your original drawing.
The prize list is extensive: * Wacom Cintiq 12WX tablet! * $750 Gift Certificate for the House Industries store! * $500 gift certificate for Utrecht! * A full set of Front Forty Books and CD's! Includes titles such ask Graffitecture, Matt Volla's Unruly Drawings, and Short Stories Illustrated By Artists. * Winning design (and designer!) to be featured in Print Magazine's February 2009 issue * An oversize poster from the Print Magazine 2008 New Visual Artists issue! * The 11-year retrospective Regional Design Annual DVD! * One year subscription to Print Magazine * $500 Threadless Gift Certificate (can be redeemed for $200 cash) * $2,000 in cash Posted by Megan Call for Entries

True T-Shirts
Community-centric tee shirt company Threadless.com is asking designers to turn the true stories of their lives into works of art in its latest " Loves" campaign. To help lead the way, Threadless has partnered up with original, personal storytelling site Fray.com, self-publishing site Blurb.com, and the film Stephen Tobolowsky's Birthday Party, written by and starring famous character actor Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day, Deadwood, Heroes) as he tells fascinating stories from his life on-screen and off. Threadless, Fray, Blurb.com and Stephen Tobolowsky are giving submitters the chance to prove that extraordinary things happen to ordinary people, and run wild with this challenge; tell their stories through design. The chosen design could become the cover of Fray's third volume of tales titled "Sex and Death," so the design must incorporate these two topics into its art. Posted by Megan Call for Entries

Sigg Design Contest
Last year, SIGG asked Japanese artists to design water bottles that captured
the essence of their culture. The result was a wonderful collection that is
going to be offered worldwide in SIGG's 2008 water bottle line.
For 2009, SIGG is looking to create a similar line of bottles
inspired by and representative of the United States. Contestants are
encouraged to work creatively, to show the U.S. as they see it and
experience it. SIGG is looking for unique, out-of-the-box designs that go
beyond stars and stripes.
The top 10
designs will be sent on to Switzerland and 6 top designs will be chosen for
the new collection. The Grand Prize winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and 100 SIGG bottles (of their design) to give out to friends and family. The other 5 winners will receive 10 bottles of their design.

How (Not) to Enter a Design Competition
Sheesh! I'm post-happy today, no? On the heels of last week's judging, here are some sure-fire ways to be sure your entry to (any) design show gets a fair shake—or not: • DO fill out the entry form neatly and completely. If there's a typo in the show annual, it's probably the result of the entrant's sloppy handwriting. Make sure that doesn't happen. • DO include a paragraph that tells the judges about the project: its particular challenges, why it succeeded, how you developed the concept. • DO consider how you assemble or package your entry. If the judges need a box cutter or jackhammer to extract your project from its wrapping, they'll give up. • DO use design competitions as an occasion to assemble your body of work from the past year in a sort of self-critique. Look at everything you've done, note what worked and didn't, and learn from it. • DON'T let your competition wins go unnoticed. When your work appears in any design show, book, publication, whatever, by all means send a letter or press release to your clients telling them about it. • DO make design awards part of your regular marketing efforts. Going into 2008, consider all the places you'll want to enter your work, make note of entry deadlines, budget for the fees and plan for the follow-up. And good luck! Call for Entries | HOW Magazine

Using Design For Good
I just wrapped up a weekend in the woods of Minnesota at Minneapolis/AIGA’s annual Design Camp (a detailed recap to come soon!), but first wanted to pass along word of a cool project that they’re organizing: “ Collapse and Recovery—the 35W Bridge Poster Project.” Many AIGA members remember being on the road at the very time that the 35W Bridge over the Mississippi River fell in Minneapolis. So, in response, the local chapter is asking designers across the country to put their skills to use and raise awareness of the tragedy by designing a poster that speaks to the bridge’s collapse. Poster designs are due October 29 and will be exhibited and auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting the Minnesota Helps—Bridge Disaster Fund. For more information and details about submitting, download an entry form. Call for Entries | Events | Industry News

Design A Cool Notebook PC
HP and MTV have teamed up for a global design competition that challenges young people to express their interests in a design for a new limited edition notebook computer. What's really cool is that the winner will be invited to attend the MTV Europe Music Awards in Munich, Germany, and travel to several HP sites, including Tokyo and Houston, to witness his or her design as it makes its way through the notebook development process.

life drawing + burlesque + anarchy = Dr. Sketchy
Posted by TriciaIn case you didn't see the write up about the book in HOW's April issue, Dr. Sketchy's Official Rainy Day Colouring Book introduces a whole new way of life drawing. As founder Molly Crabapple says, "Why can't drawing naked people be sexy?" And the answer:
We combed New York to find the most beautiful burlesque dancers, the most bizarre circus freaks, and the most rippling hunks of man. Then, every other Saturday, we let you draw them for three hours. Interspersed with posing are ridiculous drawing contests (best left handed drawing? Best incorporation of a woodland animal?) where you can win booze or prizes.

The events have been ever so popular and are branching into other cities. Notably, there is an upcoming event in Atlanta, home to this year's HOW Design Conference.
Next up, Dr. Sketchy is doing an " Anti-Art Show" and calling for submissions. Have you got the skills to be one of the top 13? Call for Entries | Events

Deadlines, Schmeadlines.
Posted by Bryn
Lots 'n' lots of deadlines in the fair month of April, at least for HOW-related things. Of note: Promotion Design Awards: Deadline is April 2. That's today, folks. Get your work together and stamp it with a postmark before midnight. In case you didn't hear, we've changed the competition to make it a bit easier to enter, with broader categories to show off even more design work. Judging starts in two weeks; we'll be sure to blog about it! You'll be bombarded with messages about the upcoming HOW Conference early-bird registration deadline (don't say I didn't warn ya). That's April 13, so pay attention. Hotel rooms and conference slots are goin' fast. Then there's the brand-spankin'-new In-HOWse Design Awards (how clever are we with the HOW reference, eh?). If you're a corporate creative, here's your chance to show off to a jury of your peers. Send us your stuff by April 19. Call for Entries

The Art's In The Mail
Posted by MeganI just got an email from Darren Di Lieto, the founder and editor of LCSV4, a cool illustration portal, about his latest project: MAiLmeART. The concept is fun but simple, just create a piece of art on an envelope, box or other mailable surface and send it to Darren. He'll post the results on the site. Even better, guest judges will be awarding monthly prizes and there will be gallery show in London and maybe even a book of the work. Call for Entries
