News
Buncha news this week—mostly from, you guessed it, the paper market. Here goes: • Wausau Paper reinvented its Royal line of premium writing, text and cover stocks, with new colors (including Basil and Winter Wheat). The brand includes Royal Cotton, Royal Laid and Royal SilkPlus, which has been rebranded as an environmental choice. Larsen worked with Wausau on the products and materials. • Neenah has updated its economical SUNDANCE writing/text/cover collection with new colors and finishes (all 10 colors are available in all 3 finishes). Farmhouse Design created the Southwestern-themed new promo. • The Strathmore Letterhead Competition is taking entries through June 30 for the second-quarter contest; the first 25 entrants will receive a $150 iTunes gift card. The top quarterly prize is $500, and an annual Grand Prize of $1,000 will be awarded in January 2009. See Strathmore.com for details. And in other news ... • Design Management Institute brings its annual branding/design conference to Cincinnati, June 11–13. Conference co-chairs are Jerry Kathman of Cincinnati's LPK and Amy Brusselback, global design director of P&G. Speakers include smart folks from P&G, Marriott Hotels, Method, the Wharton School of Business and the Cincinnati Art Museum. • Printing/publishing consultant Chuck Weger discusses large-scale font-management solutions in his whitepaper titled "Maintaining Control and Compliance in a Font-Intensive Workflow: The Case for Enterprise Font Management." It's available from Extensis. Industry News

News, etc.
As per usual, the paper companies are dominating the news this week with a flurry of releases, including: • Wausau Paper launched Digital Space, a website geared toward helping designers with the technical and production aspects of papers for digital print jobs. • Distributor Legion Paper now carries the U.K. brand Mirricard, a highly reflective paper in nine colors, with a super-smooth finish that, remarkably, is printable. • Sappi announced the Silver and Bronze winners in its North American Printer of the Year competition. Among the whole slew of recipients in various categores are several names we recognize from HOW's own design competitions, including The Hennegan Co., Williamson Printing, The Fox Co. Lithographers, Anderson Litho, Blanchette Press, Sandy Alexander and Continental Colorcraft. • Domtar's got a new swatchbook for its "workhorse" offset sheet, Husky. Domtar's Lynx brand is now FSC certified.
In some non-paper news: • Auto FX Software released a limited-time bundle of products (available through August 31) that includes Corel Painter X, Auto FX Mystical Tint Tone and Color, Mystical Lighting and several training videos. The package retails for $349, a savings of more than $550. • FunctionFox has released TimeFox Premier, which includes significant upgrades to task assignment, scheduling and calendar functions vs. the standard TimeFox edition. Learn more about this web-based product and compare the standard and premier versions. • YouSendIt, which enables users to send huge files over the web without using FTP sites or crashing their e-mail system, launched a "virtual mailbox" that firms can post on their websites, allowing partners or customers to drag and drop files delivery. Hot Shipoopi
Just because it's fun to type the word 'shipoopi' -- and because Mike and Robynne are FOH, here's a bit of Modern Dog info for the week: First, they're chatting with Debbie Millman on Design Matters this Friday. Then, they're doing a book release party/birthday celebration (Modern Dog is officially of drinking age now) in Seattle on April 23. Oh, and surely we've mentioned they're speaking at the HOW Conference in May, right? Events | Industry News

News, Etcetera
Wow! The e-mail inbox is full of industry news this week, including: • Jonathan Barnbrook's distinctive Mason is now available in OpenType format from Emigre. • More news from The Paper Mill Store than you can shake a stick at: They're now carrying additional lines from Gmund (Bier, Ever, the yummy Kaschmir and Treasury). Appleton's "insanely bright" Fluorescents line of C1S cover stock is also now available. The online retailer also offers new double-thick cover stocks from Monadnock, Mohawk and Finch. And they've added square envelopes from a variety of mills. • Sappi has issued a call for entries for its 2008 Ideas that Matter program, with submissions due May 31. The program provides grants to North American designers for development of print campaigns that support social, environmental and humanitarian causes. • Global packaging manufacturer MeadWestvaco has rebranded as MWV. • O'Reilly has published "Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac: The Missing Manual." • Paper distributor Unisource has launched greenfinder to help designers sort through paper options by their "green" characteristics. • Here's a new stock source: PhotoShelter Collection, which purports to fill the gap between Flickr and Getty with a curated collection of quality images from both amateur and pro photographers (who retain 70% of the sale price). • Benetton's Fabrica communications group (publishers of Colors magazine) is teaming up with Academy of Art University and the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco, for an exhibit and portfolio review. An event on April 18 will launch the new issue of Colors and feature editorial director Enrico Bossan, creative director Erik Ravelo and Fabrica's video/film director Babak Payami. The trio will host portfolio reviews for Academy of Art students on April 15 and 16; selected students will serve one-year internships at Fabrica in Italy. Finally, an exhibit of all 73 issues of Colors will run at San Francisco's 79 Gallery through May 17. • Domtar has a new swatchbook for its newly FSC-certified Cougar brand called "Cougar Commands Attention." Graphic Design Vs. Fine Art
Designer Stefan Bucher sent over a link to an interesting story in the Los Angeles Times about the blurring lines between art and design. The story specifically focuses on Ed Fella and Geoff McFetridge, but also mentions Gary Baseman, who is the subject of an upcoming feature in HOW. In one instance, a teetering tower of squirming hand-drawn fonts spells
out the title message. Fella employs the central units of graphic
design -- text and image -- to craft a self-contained pictogram that
advertises nothing but its own joy. Besides sharing a fondness for
hand-drawn whimsy, Fella and McFetridge match up in Worthington's view
as a telling timeline that illuminates the evolution of graphic design
as a purely creative outlet. "Geoff has essentially turned upside down
the traditional designer-client relationship with this massive
overlap," Worthington says. "He works as an illustrator and he shows at
art galleries but still essentially has design at the core of his
practice, whereas Ed always had to keep his experimental practice
totally separate from his commercial practice. By putting Geoff and Ed
together, you can see how design has shifted culturally in relationship
to art and illustration."

Speaking of Design-Industry Stats
From the graphics-industry trendwatchers at The Industry Measure comes another bit of news: The number of creative shops in the U.S. grew from 2006/2007 to 2007/2008. The group's "Design & Production Demographic Atlas" counted 52,513 total design and production establishments, a 0.9% increase (about 500 firms). That doesn't seem like whopping growth, but consider the rise in corporate design departments, the sluggish nature of the economy, and the trend toward consumer-generated/viral marketing efforts, and the data is notable. Democracy in Action
No, not inaction. For this election season (actually, it'll last for several seasons) AIGA and The New York Times have partnered on the Polling Place Project. You'll recall that William Drenttel launched this exercise in citizen journalism in 2006 to great acclaim in the design world; now it's headed for a broader audience. Ordinary folks take digital snapshots of their polling places and post them along with a survey about their voting experience. Ever wonder what a caucus looks like? Go see. Industry News

News this Week
A few news items coming in this week: envelope inspiration, carbon offsets, a nod for a design leader and a new paper. • Need info on envelopes? Go here.• The paper mills are WAY into FSC certification, carbon offsets and eco-friendly power these days. Here's another example: ThePaperMillStore.com now offers carbon-neutral shipping. So whatever pollution is generated by shipping that box of paper you just ordered is offset by carbon credits. (We're wondering if we can offset the calories in the three handfuls of M&Ms we just ate.) • Mary Pisarkiewicz, founder and CCO of Pisarkiewicz Mazur & Co. in NYC, received a "True Original" Business Award from Staples. Pisarkiewicz volunteers her marketing expertise to the Greenwich Village Middle School through the nonprofit PENCIL, which supports partnerships between business leaders and school principals. In a nice gesture, she donated the $1,500 Staples gift card back to the school. • Sappi just launched Tempo, a new paper that dries in the pressroom in half the time. What seems like an obvious benefit to printers also pays off for designers needing a sheet for a quick-turnaround job. Posted by Bryn

Eames Stamps
From the USPS: "In recognition of their groundbreaking contributions to architecture,
furniture design, manufacturing and photographic arts, designers
Charles and Ray Eames will be honored this summer with a pane of 16
stamps designed by Derry Noyes of Washington, DC. If you’ve ever sat in
a stackable molded chair, you’ve experienced their creativity. Perhaps
best known for their furniture, the Eameses were husband and wife as
well as design partners. Their extraordinary body of creative work —
which reflected the nation’s youthful and inventive outlook after World
War II — also included architecture, films and exhibits. Without
abandoning tradition, Charles and Ray Eames used new materials and
technology to create high-quality products that addressed everyday
problems and made modern design available to the American public."

Everything You Need to Know About the 08 HOW Conference
Our conference and new media colleagues worked overtime this holiday season to launch the website for this year's HOW Design Conference, May 18–21 in Boston. It's got all the info you need to plot your course for the conference, including a complete lineup of sessions, workshops, speakers, extra events and more. About half the speakers are new to the conference (including John Bielenberg, Kevin Farnham, Von Glitschka, David Schimmel and Maggie Macnab), and you'll also find a few old faves like Sam Harrison, Perula Vrontikis, the Modern Dog kids and Jeff Fisher. Whatever you're jonesin' for, we've got you covered: creative inspiration (don't miss Bill Strickland), business guidance (David Baker's the man), pricing strategies (hit the workshop with Peleg Top and Ilise Benun), advice for in-house designers (Michael Lejeune of L.A. Metro, which scored big in HOW's first annual In-HOWse Design Awards will be there). Go. Choose. Register. Count the days. See you in Boston! Events | Industry News
