Loathed Logo
I didn't think a logo redesign could be more hated than the recent
Xerox rebrand
, but it looks like Animal Planet is garnering it's own share of loathing
here
and
here
.
I'm not convinced that it's a total failure. I feel like the subtle color shift and the varying width of the letters gives the logo more energy than it had before. Am I the only one who doesn't totally hate it?

i like its energy also, but i can't get past the sideways M--i'd understand if it meant something as a 3 as well...

Megan, you may well be the only one who doesn't hate it.
I'm just not sure what they're trying to say. I feel sorry for some of those letterforms--poor things.
Some great content on this blog of late!

i just dono what happen here. i'm all for being adventurous, but it atleast has to relate. the color variations are nice, but as we all know color is a useful mask for bad design. in this case color isn't even enough.
although, the letter M is seemingly pointless on its side, I think the letter "I" in animal kills me more. and i agree those ... poor letterforms. honestly, when i saw this the typographer inside me cried a little.
generally speaking, this is more like one of those ideas that stays on the napkin, but i have a feeling this was never on paper, and was a one off on the computer ... we all know what happens then, atleast most the time

I've got some serious issues with this logo. And one of it resides in the fact that I just saw a small biz truck drive in front of me with the same lettering problem. Just because you want all the letters to stay the same width does not mean "I" should apply (especially a single block like that!). The type looks very squished in a half-assed sort of fashion. We couldn't find a font to portray "skinny & tall" well?
Also agree about the "M" - definitely not sure why it was the only thing chosen to change. Is it referring to "mammal?" "mother" earth perhaps? I'm lost!
Thanks all,

I don't get it. The only thing I see when I look at this logo is a sleep "M" and that probably isn't want they are going for. Maybe they thought if we make it really bad then everyone will talk about it and actually watch our channel again...

I'm not really a fan of the type treatment here either. But, I get a feeling of the idea that was possibly trying to be expressed. There is something animal-like about the large M. I see perhaps teeth, ears or a large mouth looking at the negative and positves of the shape. There is also an idea of the large M animal crowding out the smaller animal letter forms. If I see the letters as individual animals this way I get an overall feeling of movement which is helped along by the color variations.
I do agree with earlier comments that this was a "napkin idea" better left to the napkin or one that needed more time and attention than the final delivered product.

UGH! This looks like a "don't" example from a beginning typography class!

And the designers are ...London based design firm dunningeleyjones.com
I'm almost speechless...I didn't realize there were other designers that feel the same way about this logo lol!
