Addicted to the Internet
Posted by Megan

Do you find it difficult to stay away from the internet for more than a few days (or a few hours)? Have you stayed online longer than you intended often or very often? Have you ever attempted to conceal your internet usage from family, friends or employers? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you may be suffering from internet addication according to a recent Stanford University study.

Really? I have trouble believing that using the internet too much rises to the level of a serious compulsion or addiction. Of course, I can't bear to be disconnected for more than a few hours a day. Hmm . . .

Thought Provoking

I'm not addicted to a specific thing, just the Internet in general. For instance, I've gone two weeks without chatting, but I could still waste time on email and my friend's forum. I've fasted from myspace for forty days, but I can always find other things to waste my time. I love school and knitting, crocheting, piano, singing, scrapbooking, et cetera, but I always seem to be drawn to the computer. Please give me ways to break my addiction without recruiting my parents for help (I'm 14 and have been addicted since last summer), and without seeing a doctor. Somedays I can stay away from the computer, others I can't do anything else. Help?

The typical affected individual is a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use. While some may hear this profile and assume that a person's Internet "addiction" might actually be an extreme fondness for pornography, Aboujaoude stressed that pornography sites are just one part of the problem.

I find it very hard as a matter of fact.

Who isn't addicted to the internet? I certainly am. If I could I would navigate every day on internet.

My daughter is 14 and spent countless hours instant messaging her friends online. She even got up in the night, after I’d made her go to bed, and got on the computer. Thank God, I found parental control software Ez Internet Timer: http://www.internettimer.net It can also stop all on-line activity and block Internet browsers, e-mails, ftps or messengers according to my daily schedule.
