Illustration Advice

Scott Francis, who recently edited an upcoming HOW book about freelance illustration, sat down with author/illustrator Holly DeWolf to talk about the business.

Q. Your book is targeted to illustrators, but you wear a lot of hats—being a writer, for example. I think anyone who is creative could take something away from your book. What’s your view on the crossover between different creative occupations (for example, writing and illustration)?

A. I truly believe that creatives are good at many things. We usually have one or two major talents and some hidden talents that do not always surface right away. A job could require us to write something or create something in a different manner. This discovery can be an asset. Use it!

It’s like being a Jack & Jill of many skills but we are actually good at it. This flexibility is good to have in our economic climate. Our many talents can add new life to our career, fill in an income void and shake things up. In my book I talk about tackling unconventional markets. There are many options to your career if you need a change or more revenue. To me its like the ripple effect-you may be a top notch illustrator but you could be a whiz at words that could lead to children’s books or other hidden possibilities.

Design At The Movies

I saw Watchmen this weekend and was blown away by the opening titles. This morning, I discovered the story behind the design in my email inbox. Convenient!
Setting the tone for the film is a multi-layered, 6-minute long title sequence conceived by director Zack Snyder that features compelling 3D typography designed by yU+co, the Hollywood-based design/animation studio that previously collaborated with Snyder on the title sequence for his box-office smash hit, 300.

Set to the Bob Dylan classic “The Times They Are A-Changin,’” the title sequence strings together key events from the alternate history of the comic book series, starting from the 1940’s up to the 1980’s, the time period the story is set in. Through a series of slow-motion vignettes, we see how a collection of superheroes have influenced and altered major events such as World War II, the JFK assignation, the Cold War and the moon landing. Incorporated into each scene is the yU+co. title design, bathed in bright yellow, which plays off of the blood splattered happy-face icon that is a key visual component to both the graphic novel and the film.
See the titles here. (Update: The titles were removed by the request of Warner Bros. Lame!)

Friday News

Before the HOW staff heads out for a creative offsite this afternoon, here's a roundup of recent industry news:

Veer Ideas is the stock photo/illustration/type company's new social networking site; designers can connect, post portfolios, create new artwork and more in what Veer calls "an online creative playground."

• If you're a large firm or in-house group with tons of fonts to manage and many, many workstations, know that Extensis is now shipping Universal Type Server, a font-management solution for Mac and PC. The system tracks metadata including licenses, permissions and keywords and allows users to create font sets and families.

Duffy & Partners, Minneapolis, created a new identity system for HandsOn Network, the nation's largest community volunteer organization, which manages millions of volunteers and 50,000 community impact projects. In addition to the logo, Duffy developed visual collateral, T-shirts, buttons and a tradeshow booth.

PhotoShelter announced two initiatives: Shoot! The Day pairs the company with Nikon and Apple for a one-day photography event where professionals shoot images of subjects that stock buyers recently identified as needing new material. And School of Stock is a website that offers pros and amateurs tips on shooting and selling their work.

• Shutterstock launched an online stock-footage collection of "royalty-free forever" video clips that's available on a per-image or subscription basis. The library includes work from 100,000+ photographers and videographers worldwide.

Neenah Paper released three new swatchbooks: Esse "To Be" features textures and colors created by Italian designer and colorist Beatrice Santiccioli. Minneapolist firm Design Guys created the promo. For Oxford writing, text and cover papers, designer Holly Hunt developed four color palettes that reflect the line's luxurious appeal. For UV/Ultra II and Clearfold, Design Guys again developed a piece that demos Neenah's translucent paper lines and shows its on-press performance.

• Design/branding firm laga (formerly Lipson Alport Glass) and global agency Desgrippes Gobé, have joined together. The new firm, Brandimage—Desgrippes & Laga, provides branding, strategy, architecture and design services in various disciplines. The new venture creates one of the largest design firms worldwide, with $60 million annual billings and 300 employees globally.
