If you paid ANY attention to the design annuals in the 1990s, you couldn't miss the
work of Des Moines, IA-based Sayles Graphic Design. John Sayles' graphic, bold, stylistic
work garnered much attention throughout that decade and well into this one. His business
partner, Sheree, was a frequent source for HOW on marketing and biz-dev topics, and
both of them made more than one appearance at the HOW Design Conference. Our June
2007 issue featured <a href="http://www.howdesign.com/article/collections">an article
about</a> John's extensive collection of enamelware and Sheree's collection of vintage
cosmetic compacts.<br /><br />
After nearly 25 years running their studio, the two have shuttered Sayles Graphic
Design. They've both found other, more meaningful callings.<br /><br />
Just last week, Sheree shared her impressions of the emotional and business aspects
of their decision. <a href="http://www.howdesign.com/article/saylesgraphicdesign">Read

Here’s two words that should spark your interest: pro sports. As in the NFL, NBA,
MLB and NHL. If you don’t know what those mean, um...sad. If you’re a fan, however,
you may be who we’re looking for. You see, we need a highly talented and experienced
environmental designer eager to work for a national account partnered with pro teams.
Like yesterday.<br /><br />
What would you be doing? Short answer: kick-butt design. Long answer: help us develop
dynamic environments, short-term exhibits, and signage systems for stadiums and large-audience
venues across the country.<br /><br />
Here’s what we’re looking for:
<br /><br />
·3 years minimum design experience, preferably as an exhibit designer.
<br /><br />
·Design degree, preferred.
<br /><br />
·Project management, budgeting, and construction/installation experience are essential.
<br /><br />
·Demonstrated leadership and communication skills.
<br /><br />
·Strong portfolio of 3D exhibit designs. Like strong, folks. Wow us.
<br /><br />
·The ability to work under pressure and manage multiple jobs at once, all of which
may be in various stages of design, installation and maintenance.<br /><br />
·The absence of an ego. We push ourselves. Can you accept constructive feedback and
criticism?
<br /><br />
·High end user of Photoshop and Illustrator.
<br /><br />
·Fast 3D Modeling
<br /><br />
·Ability to design 2D graphics for exhibit designs and create basic detail drawings
if needed.
<br /><br />
·Ability to mentor junior designers.
<br /><br />
·A friendly disposition. We like nice, charming, go-getters.

It's not often that we get wind of a new design organization that's forming, but sure
enough, this week marks the debut of the Society of Design. What's the deal? We asked
Corie Deshong from the Lancaster, PA design firm <a href="http://www.gowelsh.com/">Go
Welsh</a> (whose founder, Craig Welsh, is behind SOD) for scoop:<br /><blockquote>The organization was created with the intention to find ways for designers
to contribute to the greater community. SOD's members agree to volunteer at least
10 hours of community service each year.<br /></blockquote><blockquote>SOD will conduct two exhibits in its first year featuring
original works from participating members. In each case, a second non-profit will
benefit from SOD's efforts. ... If all goes as planned, SOD should be able to donate
roughly $20,000 in its first year to approximately 15 other non-profit organizations.
All through the generosity of its members and sponsors.<br /></blockquote>SOD has an ambitious agenda for its first year:<br /><br />
• The Thank You Project, featuring original card designs by Ken Barber, Tad Carpenter,
Jessica Hische and Haley Johnson; half the proceeds go to charities of the designers'
choice and half to funding SOD initiatives.<br /><br />
• A commemorative poster commissioned from Hatch Show Print<br /><br />
• A series of lectures featuring Chip Kidd, Design Army and Modern Dog<br /><br />
• A visit to Fallingwater next spring<br /><br />

This new service really caught our eye, and if you're a designer, illustrator or photographer
with an extensive online portfolio, you should check it out: <a href="http://www.imagerights.com/">ImageRights</a> helps
protect copyrights by scanning the web for unauthorized reuse of your work, using
image-recognition technology. Upload your image files to the service, and you'll get
a weekly report that details any matches ImageRights has discovered, along with contact
info for the infringing sites so you can follow-up with a stern warning. The service
starts at $4.95 per month for a portfolio of 250 images. ImageRights debuted this

When the HOW Conference headed to Atlanta in 2007, we connected with the crew at <a href="http://methanestudios.com/">Methane
Studios</a> to collaborate on a poster to commemorate the event. The project was such
fun that we've subsequently teamed up with local design firms: <a href="http://stoltzedesign.com/">Stoltze
Design</a> created a poster for our Boston conference in 2008, and <a href="http://erickmontes.tumblr.com/">Erick
Montes</a> did Austin's this year.

My conference colleague Katie and I just got off the phone with Stuart and Nicky Alden
of <a href="http://www.idahostew.com/pages/02_what-we-do/06_posters/06_posters_g1.html">Idaho
Stew</a> about the 2010 conference poster for Denver. They're stoked about the project,
and so are we. We can't wait to see what they come up with.
<br /><br />
And I'm definitely planning to purchase a limited edition, screenprinted version from
them at the conference in Denver. It'll make a nice addition to my growing collection
of sweet HOW Conference posters.<br /><br /><div><font color="#000000" face="Garamond" size="2">Posted by Bryn</font></div><img width="0" height="0" src="http://blog.howdesign.com/aggbug.ashx?id=e2990ebb-b314-4f79-8546-bf6dc3a73ec6" /></div>

We've been fond of the work that Scott Belsky and his team at Behance have been doing
to help designers be more creative (we <a href="http://www.behance.com/teamblog/Cover-Story-HOW-Magazine/90">featured</a> Belsky's

paper products</a> they sell to help capture and act on ideas.<br /><br />
So we were glad to hear that HOW and Behance are teaming up to offer HOW fans/readers/visitors
a <a href="http://howdesign.com/actionmethod/?r=HOWBl111109">deal on the Behance Action

From <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode.cfm?id=boost-your-creativity-with-eye-move-09-11-10">Scientific
American</a>: A study published this week in the journal <em style="">Brain and Cognition</em> shows
that when you boost the level of communication between the right and left hemispheres
your creativity increases.
<p class="MsoNormal">
Sixty-two subjects performed a creativity task, where they had to come up with as
many alternate uses for common objects like, a paper clip, pencil, shoe, etc. as they
could in one minute.
</p><p class="MsoNormal">
After this initial task researchers asked subjects to move their eyes to follow a
target as it moved horizontally left to right for 30 seconds. This exercise is thought
to increase the cross-talk between the hemispheres.
</p><p class="MsoNormal">
Then the subjects completed the creative task again. Results were surprising.<span style="">  </span>Subjects
came up with significantly more unique uses for the everyday items, than the control
group who stared straight ahead.

On a staff of all women, you might be surprised that the HOW team includes three die-hard
football fans (two in fantasy football/pick'em leagues and one with season tix to
the hometown Cincinnati Bengals). So this particular NFL watcher loved today's post
on the <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/ken-carbone/yes-less/penalty-nfls-helmets-kick-season-unneccessary-blandness?partner=homepage_newsletter">FastCompany
design blog</a>, where designer Ken Carbone flags several NFL teams for awful logo
designs.
<br /><br />
We were glad that Ken (who, it should be noted, will be a speaker at next year's <a href="http://www.howconference.com">HOW
Design Conference</a>), gave thumbs-up to our Bengals helmets:<br /><blockquote>"The absolutely best team helmet belongs to the Cincinnati Bengals. The
tiger stripe pattern embraces the whole spherical form. There is nothing else like
it in the NFL. It looks fierce from any angle and boldly breaks from tradition."<br /></blockquote><img src="http://blog.howdesign.com/content/binary/Bengals.jpg" border="0" height="373" width="400" /><br /><br />
Among several teams that Carbone takes issue with are the Washington Redskins (frankly,
the team itself could use a makeover). Carbone proposes a new look for the beleaguered
'Skins. (Old and Carbone's redesigned versions below.)<br /><br /><br /><img src="http://blog.howdesign.com/content/binary/Picture%202%5B1%5D%5B2%5D%5B3%5D%5B4%5D.png" border="0" height="176" width="200" />            <img src="http://blog.howdesign.com/content/binary/newRedskins.jpg" border="0" height="192" width="200" /><br /><br /><div><font color="#000000" face="Garamond" size="2">Posted by Bryn</font></div><img width="0" height="0" src="http://blog.howdesign.com/aggbug.ashx?id=b9ccc59f-d10d-4918-908b-8b4cd19a6dbe" /></div>

        <a href="http://howdesign.coroflot.com/public/job_details.asp?job_id=24188">Digital
Art Director<br />
Sullivan, New York City<br /></a>
        <br />
Sullivan is seeking an experienced Art Director to join our growing digital team.
As a communications strategy and design firm with 20 marketing and creative professionals,
we offer a hands-on environment where you can get involved at every stage of a digital
project. As a B2B magazine top agency of the year and an Inc. 5000 company, we can
also offer experience working with high-profile financial services and non-profit
clients.<br /><br />
Who you are<br />
You have a minimum of 5+ years of experience designing in the digital space, and understand
the limitations and possibilities of designing for the Web or other online media.
You balance highly creative and conceptual thinking with sensitivity to user experience
and usability. You are detail-oriented, and have a deep understanding of typography,
color, composition, page structure, and interaction design. Complex displays of information
such as financial dashboards interest you, and you have experience simplifying interfaces
while keeping them engaging and interactive. Your written and verbal skills are excellent.<br /><br />
What you do<br />
You lead the design direction for internal and external digital client projects, partnering
with information architects, senior level marketers, and writers. When a project begins,
you engage with both the users and the content, intent on not just translating a visual
system, but using design to create a compelling story about a product or organization.
You present your work to clients, and feel very comfortable speaking to senior-level
professionals. You report directly to the Executive Creative Director.<p><font color="#000000" face="Garamond" size="2">Posted by Megan</font></p><img width="0" height="0" src="http://blog.howdesign.com/aggbug.ashx?id=6e5d7376-7f01-497e-b51b-59852aa2207d" /></div>

Count us as huge fans of the lovely and talented <a href="http://debbiemillman.blogspot.com/">Debbie

super nice person, to boot. Turns out we're not alone in our fandom ... New York Magazine
touts her book (part graphic memoir, part brand bible) in this week's <a href="http://nymag.com/arts/all/approvalmatrix/61844/">Approval
