This useful blog post lays out a 5
step system for finding stock images for any project. Here's step 1:

Before you can begin looking for the right image it's critical to gather
and list all of the constraints you'll face when using this image. Almost every project
has certain limitations on the imagery that will work best in the final use, and it's
important to know these limitations before you begin to spend time searching.

Here are a few common constraints to watch out for:

Exact Dimension (e.g. must be 3"x5", can't be wider than 600px)

Aspect Ratio (e.g. must be 8:10 aspect, must be portrait orientation)

Quality and Type (e.g. must be > 300dpi, must be in vector format)

Color (e.g. image needs to be predominantly blue, image should be
light)

Misc Other Limits (e.g. image must be cut-out of background, etc…)

Once you have the exact details and requirements for your project, put them into a
list or some other format that's good for quick reference. This will help to easily
cut out images that won’t work, as well as help you save time and guarantee that the
final choice is perfect for the project.

Posted by Megan

Last week, I posted a bit about the HOWie
Zine, a just-for-fun project that's the brainchild of the HOW
Forum. Shortly afterward, a package on landed on my desk containing yet another
HOW Forum project. This set of a dozen square magnets features illustrations by various
HOW Forum participants. The artworks were originally posted in the Fridge
thread of the Forum, where creatives go to share their latest work. The magnet
project was spearheaded by Forum-ites ksavage and ladycupcake. You can buy
a set for your own home or office fridge ... proceeds go to OperationNICE,
the side project of yet another Forum veteran, who goes by mel.

Like what you see? We're giving away one set of magnets to the third person who comments

Wisconsin.

This position requires maturity, professionalism, diligence, and independence, working
directly with technical staff and marketing leaders to determine project scope and
provide the most pertinent informational or strategic visual solution. As AEI's fundamental
engineered "product" is a range of reliably and efficiently sustained environments,
the ability to conceptualize design from verbal description of abstract concepts is
vital. Some knowledge of architecture or engineering is a plus; active interest is
essential.

The position requires strong graphic management and implementation ability, and the
ability to multitask in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment. Must have solid
experience with illustration and color management, and have strong ability working
in Adobe creative suite and related graphics software. Experience with 3D design is
highly desirable. This position also supports staff members by providing help on proper
use of graphics software, color process, and equipment. Successful candidate must
remain current on technology/software and on design, illustration and communications
trends.

For several years now, the design community on the HOW
Forum has been collaborating periodically on a project they call the HOWie
Zine. It's a client-free, back-to-the-drawing-board creative exercise. The premise
is simple: the group votes on a theme, designers raise their hands to participate,
and then they create pages (each edition is 7 in. square) for a hand-bound volume.
Designer Patti Bachelder initially got the ball rolling, and since then, other Forum
die-hards have stepped up to help shepherd the process and keep the project going.
They're on Volume 10—and now they've created a website that features a gallery of
past zines. Check it out here, and
play along if you're interested.

They're on Volume 10—and now they've created a website that features a gallery of
past zines. Check it out here, and
play along if you're interested.

the famous antique row. Start off near 13th where you can visit City

through the postmodern central branch of the Denver
