Comment on How to Start Mastering One of the Most Misunderstood (and Powerful) Techniques in Branding by John Parham

Carol-Anne,

Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the article! Once you recognize what a brand extension is, you will realize that they are out there – everywhere! Some good; some bad; and some just silly. I'll write about all in the future. In the meanwhile, I recently came across what I think is a good one: Ritz Crackerfuls. It's the Ritz Cracker answer to snack food and I think they will be successful because they are doing a lot of things correctly. See the article by Stuart Elliott for the New York Times here:

http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/09/kraft-tries-again-with-a-ritz-snack-aiming-younger/

What's right? Ritz is extending a famous taste or ingredient – the classic Ritz flavor we know and love, and, they are making the brand cool and relevant again with the name "Crackerfuls" and the message "Get hunger before it gets you."

I'd like to know what you think, but the market will decide. As a famous, and wise, designer once said: "It ain't creative if it doesn't sell."

Best,

John Parham

Damn good design is the one that is made from the heart, thinking how real good design is suppose to be, and not only accepting what the client created on his head. It's showing the client that you know what you're doing, that you're doing great and even the client not accepting the ideia, it's still amazing to be featured on a book like "Damn Good Design".

Congratulations Kate! Your designs are so vibrant and happy. I will be at Surtex as well, attending the conference, not the show floor. I hope our paths cross and best of luck to you.

Good for you, Megan.

I'm also totally addicted to email and I've been contemplating a two week sabbatical from not only email but technology in general. Having all these peripheral devices reminds me of the movie WALL-E, where everyone spends their lives within their isolated, personal space and never interact with others personally or the natural world. Their bodies (and likely their minds) suffer as a result.

It's not about practicality. It's about setting yourself apart from the competition. No, I wouldn't carry this in my wallet, but I would keep it on my desk somewhere. I would show it off to colleagues. The point is, I would remember this company whenever I needed any of the services it provides.

Expensive, messy and cumbersome, but these cards land the company one good client, isn't that a successful business card?

It's always good to get an idea of where you stand. These numbers seem a bit higher than what I had researched just 2 years ago in the Seattle market. I wonder why that is?

Thanks!
