Those Paper Ads
Posted by
BrynSay what you will about those pesky paper inserts in every issue of HOW. But I just got a note from my dad, handwritten on the little fold-up notecard that he tore out of the Strathmore ad that's bound into the December issue, between pages 32 and 33. It reads, in part, "I am proud of what you and your team publish. Keep it up!" Boy, does that ever brighten up a girl's Monday afternoon! (If you have a minute right now, find your copy of the December issue, tear out that Strathmore ad between pages 32 and 33, and send a note to a favorite person.) Just for Fun

How Could You Not Love a Face Like This?
Posted by
BrynWe're thoroughly charmed by Sybille Hagmann's new(ish) typeface, Odile, with all its lovely alternate characters and ornaments. We're preparing a feature article on Odile's development, and now we want to set the entire magazine in it. Design Resources

Attention, Sportsfans!
Posted by
Bryn
Here at HOW HQ, we're all girls, but a couple of us are sports fans. OK ... really just me. Which is why I found Coudal's latest venture, SixteenStraight.com, to be simply friggin' genius. Mr. Mooth is from Chicago, so I have a smidge of loyalty to Da Bears.

Painting Sushi on Rocks
Posted by Meganvia Craft
You may never have seen the book Painting Animals on Rocks, but back in the day this was one of HOW's parent company's best-selling craft titles. I was never a huge fan of the animals, but these food-on-rock creations by artist Suzi Chua are more stunning and realistic than anything I've ever seen before. If the craft team decides to do a book called Painting Food on Rocks, I would happily buy a copy! Just for Fun

Pantone Reveals Spring 2007 Colors
Posted by Megan
via Dexigner"Most often, colors are not completely reinvented each season,"
observes Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color
Institute. "Instead, they evolve from one season to the next. The Apple
Cinnamon of fall, for example, becomes the Café Crème of spring. What
does change each season is the variation of the colors, and/or the
combinations of colors. While navy, black and white are still a
presence for spring 2007, designers are choosing a greater variety of
neutrals as the canvas for this season's captivating new hues." Industry News

Design for a Cause
Posted by MeganFor the last 6 months or so, we've been seeing a lot of great posters designed for The Hurricane Poster Project, a collaboration between designers and The Red Cross to raise money for Katrina victims. Designer Greg Bennett from Baltimore just sent us his recently completed poster. "The primary visual started as a voodoo doll which is one of many symbolic images of New Orleans," Bennett explains. "A good friend brought it back for me when she was there 5 years ago." Bennett's poster was 4-color process printed with a flood varnish.

Addicted to the Internet
Posted by MeganDo you find it difficult to stay away from the internet for more than a few days (or a few hours)? Have you stayed online longer than you intended often or very often? Have you ever attempted to conceal your internet usage from family, friends or employers? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you may be suffering from internet addication according to a recent Stanford University study. Really? I have trouble believing that using the internet too much rises to the level of a serious compulsion or addiction. Of course, I can't bear to be disconnected for more than a few hours a day. Hmm . . . Thought Provoking
