Word As Image
Posted by Megan

via Notcot

These obsessive drawings of interiors by Swedish artist by Thomas Broomé meld type and image into a singular hypnotic vision.

From the exhibition catalog:

ModernMantra is a series of 18 ”text drawings”, made in Indian ink on white paper. In a somewhat schematic fashion they portray sterile and depopulated interiors, often simply but properly furnished. One does not have to get very close to them to see that the drawings are really calligrammes, that the interiors are drawn with words that simultaneously describe what they depict.

Keep Up The Tempo
Posted by Megan

Tempo, a new online magazine, is just another example of how sophisticated design is being created by more and more people. A group of Canadian high school students started the zine as their final senior project, but decided to keep it going online after they graduated. We'll been keeping an eye out for the next issue!

We're Being 'Greenwashed'
Posted by Bryn

I love to cook. And I love working with fresh, local ingredients. I'm a Nutrition Facts box-reader, and I tend to go for minimally processed, natural foods without all the commercial fats and sugars. And yet, sometimes I feel like I'm being snookered by all the buzzwords and design cues employed in food packaging. Does the word 'Natural' slapped on a bag of fried snack chips or a can of 7-Up make them any more healthy? Really? Starbucks may be ditching trans fats in its baked goods, but that slab o' marble pound cake still packs a calorie wallop.

In an article in today's NYTimes, Kim Severson dubs this packaging/branding technique 'greenwashing.' Paula Scher and Brian Collins weigh in, derisively, on the trend. (Registration may be required to view the article.)

Not a Creature Was Stirring

We're just about to close things down here at HOW HQ until after the holidays; we're all taking a break from magazine proofs, e-mails, conference planning and the like. The Blog is going to be fairly quiet next week. But we'll resume posting with gusto in the new year. Happy holidays!

Buttons!
Posted by Bryn

Ever since we profiled them in HOW's December 2005 issue, we continue to be mighty impressed by those folks at Coudal Partners. (And not just because Jim has agreed to speak at the HOW Conference in Atlanta.) Awhile back, we blogged about Coudal's homegrown sports paraphernalia biz Sixteen Straight. (Rex Grossman sort of scotched that project.) Now they've got a new venture, Pinsetter. Get a full set of alphabet buttons (2 of each letter, plus punctuation and a red heart) for just $39.

Funny Design
Posted by Megan

Designer Brian Sooy just sent me a fun link to The Onion store. These fake boxes were designed by Arik Nordby, who has his own humerous golf-merch site called Bogeypro.com. The idea behind the boxes is that you put a real present inside, but when the recipient first unwraps the gift, they'll wonder what kind of drug you were smoking while Christmas shopping this year.

Pecha What?
Posted by Megan

from Wired

Pecha kucha—pronounced pet-shah coot-shah—is an onomatopoeic Japanese phrase meaning "the sound of casual chatter."

But for a small but growing band of international designers, artists and creative types, pecha kucha is nothing less than the buzzword of 2006. For these people -- and since last Tuesday I'm one of them -- pecha kucha has come to mean a chance to get out from behind your computer, meet like-minded people, show them your work, and exchange ideas -- all in a six-minute slot. More.

Happiness Is Good For Creativity
Posted by Megan

From Scientific American

Despite those who romanticize depression as the wellspring of artistic genius, studies find that people are most creative when they are in a good mood, and now researchers may have explained why: For better or worse, happy people have a harder time focusing. More.
