Meat And Cheese
Posted by MeganI just got an awesome surprise in the mail today from Planet Propaganda: the limited edition Dunny duo they designed with Kidrobot as a keepsake for the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Triennial. And you're in luck, you can still snap these great vinyl toys up for ten bucks each. You can see more of Planet's work and all the other great design selected for the Triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt through July 29.

Material World
Posted by Bryn
As a follow up to this week's HOW e-newsletter, which focused on sustainable design, here's food for thought if you're considering updating your workspace and want to incorporate recycled materials. The House & Garden section in today's NYTimes has an article about alternative countertops, including several that incorporate recycled materials. A few jumped out at us: PaperStone by Kliptech, a recycled paper-and-resin composite that's comparably inexpensive and surprisingly durable and comes in a gorgeous chocolate color, among other hues. And IceStone is a terrazzo made of recycled glass and concrete that comes in a range of stunning colors. Design Resources

Happy Birthday Ideaspotting!
Posted by MeganIt's a bit belated, but I just realized that Ideaspotting, one of the first projects we developed for the new HOW Book line, has been out in the world for just over a year. Written by beloved HOW Conference speaker Sam Harrison, Ideaspotting is a small book full of big ideas to get readers out of their creative ruts. Happy Birthday! HOW Books

Things Are Going Great ...
Posted by Bryn
A weekly industry email that popped into my inbox today got my attention: The latest survey and report from The Industry Measure shows that business conditions are on the upswing for creative firms. Sounds like good news—but what's it all mean? I asked Richard Romano, analyst and writer for The Industry Measure, for a bit of interpretation. Romano says, "The Business Conditions Index is based on the extent to which our survey respondents felt that business in the past 12 months has been better than, about as good as, worse than, or much worse than business conditions in the previous 12 months." The latest BCI shows that creatives feel optimistic about the current state of their businesses—Romano says it's the highest the index has been since the winter of 2000–2001. He notes that a major economic slump that sent marketing dollars down the toilet happened in 2001: "Not that we’re predicting that this will happen again; we’re just sayin’." In-house departments are feeling the love as corporations are generally healthy (which translates to healthy budgets for those in-house teams). Design firms are keeping busy with lots of web and print design work. The picture is mixed for ad agencies. Want to know more? Visit The Industry Measure. Industry News

Desk Pets
Posted by MeganIf you've got an Xacto knife, a glue stick and a spare 15 or 20 minutes, you can build yourself a fun pet for your desk. I made the red bird and the orange monkey yesterday. You could make a whole army of rainbow colored monkeys. Or not. Just for Fun

Playing with paper
Posted by Bryn
Just got a press release from Neenah: Seems that the mill was in a bit of a quandary, according to the release; they'd created the Eames Collection of gorgeous new papers that designers were afraid to use because they were so spiffy. (Which is funny, because we've seen a bunch of work in HOW's various competitions that was printed on Eames.) So Neenah has repositioned the brand to be an "everyday" choice.

A Long Shot
Posted by Bryn
via VeryShortListThis was the subject of our lunch conversation yesterday (over veggie burrito bowls at Chipotle, thank you very much): the long shot. Really ... the long shot, done in a single, unedited take that's a signifier of a filmmaker's mastery and vision. The blog Daily Film Dose has a collection of remarkable clips showcasing the very best long shots in filmdom. A couple of my favorite movies made the list: Boogie Nights (the opening sequence, where we meet all the main characters and Roller Girl skates off to the loo) and Goodfellas (when Henry takes Karen to the Copa and they go in through the side door). Eye candy for a Friday! Just for Fun

Type of the Weird
Posted by Megan
via 30gms This is just too weird. Each of these objects is an agate cabochon, the letters appearing on
them formed by the combination of natural iron fractures and a very
skilled lapidary artist. The most commonly revealed pattern is a simple
cross but occasionally letters are found. It took an agate collector
over 20 years to assemble four complete alphabet collections.
One of the collections recently sold at auction for $11,000! Typography

Buzzing for Brands
Posted by Bryn
Via AdvertisingAgeBig marketers drool over the idea of sparking consumer-generated buzz about their products. So how do you do that—successfully (there are lots of ways to do it wrong)—and, perhaps more important, measure it? AdAge.com has an interesting article about creating buzz for brands. (And yeah, the Rob Mooth who's quoted in the piece is my better half.) Thought Provoking

New Identity
Posted by Megan
Minneapolis-based Design Guys has an unexpected new indentity inspired by a paint-by-numbers picture of birds. The look carries through to their letterhead, which has a series of laser-cuts of a bird taking flight. The whole point is that their work is not typical—not what you'd expect. And who'd expect birds from a firm that used to have a retro-garage look? Designers

The FUTURE
Posted by Megan
As we've been wrapping up our August issue, which is all about the future of design, I've naturally had the FUTURE on my mind. So I was drawn to a story in today's Fast Company newsletter called "The Future is a Mixed Bag," all about the upsides and downsides of what's to come. It's certainly worth a read, plus the author looks like a young Bill Murray!

An Ode To The Employee
Posted by MeganJosh Jeffryes just posted a lovely little essay on The Business of Design Online about becoming an employee after running your own business. Of course, it's a culture shock, but Jeffryes finds comfort in the power of the creative team.
