Bubble Bags

Speaking of speech bubbles (see Photoshop Logo post below), I just ran across this Word Bubble Laptop Bag on swissmiss, a design blog Bryn just told me about the other day. The bubble motif is also available on a really lovely shoulder bag. All the bags, and other fun products, are made by hand by Michelle Kline of Portland-based SNAP Design.

Y Is For Yeti

Designer and illustrator Jon Setzen of Standard Motion in Brooklyn recently designed an original alphabet poster for his soon-to-be-born first child. My favorite letter is "Y is for Yeti." The scribbley creature also shows up on a concert poster Jon designed for Black Mountian/The Cave Singers. Both posters can be ordered from Standard Motion.

Talking About The New Photoshop Logo

There's a discussion going on in the HOW Forum about the brand new Photoshop logo. Love it? Hate it? Chime in with your opinion here.

Personally, it reminds me too much of one of those ubiquitous speech bubble logos that have garnered much attention (and derision) lately.

The Way Camping Should Be

In about 2.5 weeks, I’m going to be heading out to Minneapolis to attend the Minneapolis/AIGA Design Camp from October 5 through 7. HOW editors have had the chance to attend in the past and only have had good things to say about the retreat to the backwoods of Nisswa, MN, so, with this being my first time heading out for the event, I'm pretty pumped. I’m especially looking forward to getting to finally getting to meet Jakob Trollback, who wrote a story for HOW earlier this year. Plus the schedule says that there will be karaoke (I’m content with the sidelines, thankyouverymuch) and s’mores and a bonfire. Yes, the title of this blog entry speaks for itself.

If anyone else is headed out for the event, be sure to say hello!

In Da House
The gang at House Industries has released their spring 2008 clothing collection (hmm ... what to call it? Street wear? Skate wear?): T-shirts, retro-punky golf attire (to be worn with a certain degree of irony while on the links), hoodies and pullovers.

Smokin' Design

Tricia Bateman (former HOW Art Director) just forwarded me a screen-grab of an email she got from Camel Cigarettes. They're running a promotion for a new version of Camel Lights asking consumers to vote for their favorite package design. I wanted to read more about the competition, but the Camel website requires registration and I don't want to get on that mailing list. Still, this is an interesting use of design to foster customer interaction.

Strategic Gift Giving

Summer is still in the air but now is the perfect time to think about holiday-themed promotions and gifts. The Business of Design Online has a good article about how to turn a client gift into a promotional opportunity. You can see other examples of great promo work in the current issue of HOW.

Winning Websites

It's impossible to find all the good stuff the web has to offer, so checking out award-winning sites is a good way to see some of the best all in one place. The Pixel Awards, now in its second year, honors 20 compelling sites in a variety of categories. They've just posted the top 5 entries in each of those categories and you can vote for the People's Champ Winner.

What Do You Weigh?

A bathroom scale, that tells you how much you weigh in celebrities instead of pounds (from Baby Jesus to King Kong), is just one of the humerous offerings of Angry Retail, a Dublin, Ireland-based company founded by two graphic designers. The web store also sells T-shirts, posters, bags and buttons.

Logo Design Process

It's always interesting to see exactly how a designer works and it's rare to get the opportunity. A colleage recently stumbled on just such a step-by-step deconstruction of a logo design process and sent it to me (thanks, Pam). It's actually from a site that I like a lot, Chuck Green's Ideabook. It was a HOW Top 10 Site recently, but I thought it was worth pointing out this specific page.

Type Underground

P22 just released Underground Pro, an updated version of Underground, which is based on Edward Johnston's historical type design for London Transport's Underground Railway system. The font system includes six weights. Other features include Small Caps and Petite Caps for all weights, titling options that mimic London Transport signage and the addition of lower case characters to the bold weight.

The result is a series of attractive ads that subtley promote the firm, while they bring attention to the causes.

Look Here

USA Today's pop culture blog, Pop Candy by Whitney Matheson mentions The Look Book (new from HOW) in today's post.

She says:  "I'm also reading: A gorgeous book just came out called The Look Book by Chris Sickels (HOW Books, $17.99). It's somewhere between a children's book and an art book—he does this amazing 3-D illustrations that remind me of Tim Burton movies and the Neighborhood of Make-Believe."

Philly's Worst Logo
Every town has its share of terrible logos, but Philadelphia's Gyro Worldwide decided to do something about it by sponsoring the Philly's Worst Logo competition. They rounded up a bunch of bad logos then asked everyone to vote. The "winning" logo was redesigned by Gyro's crack team of interns and the results are actually pretty good.
