Stop Motion
Designer (and friend of HOW) Steve Gordon just emailed us a link to a creepy, cool stop-motion animation. I poked around the web and found the site of the clip's creator, BLU. News You Can (Maybe) Use
A bunch of news updates on this dreary Wednesday: • We've heard of designers donating their creative talents to a worthy cause, but this—wow! A group of Pittsburgh design and marketing folks are teaming up to raise money for breast cancer research not by doing some pro-bono work, but by climbing really tall mountains. The group, working with the Pittsburgh Ad Fed, is part of the national Climb for Hope. Friend of HOW Ted Williams let us know about the project; he and fellow creatives Nick Cobler, Todd Lepley and Laura Willumsen are climbing Ecuador's second highest peak, Cotopaxi, in January; a fifth team member, Karen Kern, is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in June. Dennis Brown of Giant Ideas in PGH is managing campaign. • Pantone and onOne Software recently announced a bundle of digital-imaging products geared toward improving color fidelity in creative projects; it includes the Pantone hueyPro calibrator and onOne's Genuine Fractals 5, a Photoshop plug-in for image scaling. • CTI Paper USA is now stocking 180+ Strathmore Writing and Script envelope styles. • Rocky Nook, a division of O'Reilly, has released "Managing Your Photographic Workflow with Photoshop Lightroom." For a review of Lightroom and two other photo-workflow applications (Nikon NX and Apple's Aperture), pick up the December issue of HOW. • Appleton Coated Paper's 10th annual design competition, U B the Judge, is accepting entries through December 31; use the online entry form to submit work printed all or in part on Utopia. Designers at U B the Judge events in 5 major cities will select the winners. • VT3 Studio released VT3 Video Suite Limited Edition, a one-click tool for converting video into 33 different formats, including Flash, for display on players including the iPhone and iPod; sadly, for Mac users, the product is currently available only for Windows machines. • The School of Visual Arts Masters Series retrospective exhibit on Steven Heller, featuring the prolific designer and author's books and design work, continues through December 8. Design Against Fur
Every year, the Fur Free Alliance, an international coalition of animal protection groups (including The Humane Society of the United States), invites college and university students around the world to enter the Design Against Fur poster design contest. Creative Type
The type-design firm Underware has a reputation for giving amazing workshops. They recently held a workshop during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and the results are captured here. Pretty Paper
All the designers I know seem to have at least one (or two or three) notebooks going at the same time. They may take client notes in one with lines and save sketches in an unlined version. However, they're used, pretty notebooks make a perfect gift for the creatives in your life. Design*Sponge just posted a great roundup of gorgeous journals, notebooks and planners. Terrific Titles
Production & design company Imaginary Forces recently completed main titles and animated content for the new FOX sitcom " Back to You" starring Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton. The main titles are executed in an illustrated style reminiscent of film title sequences in the 1960s, and take viewers on a journey from the cityscape into the inner workings of a newsroom. Opening on the Pittsburgh skyline against a burnt yellow sky, the camera moves through 3D space through the various sound stages of the network building. As each character and their newsroom personalities are identified by the highly stylized illustrations, the color transitions from the yellow of a setting sun to the blue and purple of evening.

Delivering Great Design
Willoughby Design Group, in collaboration with the United Nations, recently helped launch the international brand campaign Deliver Now for Women and Children at Bryant Park in New York City. Picking up from this report, a bit more info from HOW's Mind Your Own Business Conference in San Diego, which wrapped up yesterday (November 4). The big highlight of Day 3 -- and of the conference overall -- was Deborah Dawton, CEO of London's Design Business Association. Our peers across the pond are beginning to get their collective heads around the massive challenge of measuring (really!) the bottom-line value of design. Like, in terms of goods sold, or dollars saved, or reputation enhanced, or effectiveness increased. Dawton didn't have all the answers, but she DID have all the questions: specifically, the questions designers must ask their clients in order to measure design's effectiveness and, in turn, to define their work's worth. She noted that "The businesses you work for aren't all that different from the businesses you work in" -- in other words, the very same business challenges a design firm faces (profitability, staffing, efficiency, differentiation) are the ones the client faces, just on a larger scale. So it's imperative for designers to understand their OWN businesses as well as their clients'. The first step to measuring design's value, she noted, is to determine the client's current business state before the project begins -- it's impossible to peg increased sales to a brochure design when you don't know what sales were before the brochure. And it's critical to then define, "How will we know if this project is successful?" and, finally, to get as much information from your client about business results. Afraid they won't give you that info? Ya gotta ask. After some late-night discussions and early morning roundtables, the conference wrapped up on Sunday with " Crucial Conversations," in which Ron McMillan outlined some tools to use when we're engaged in touch conversations where emotions, stakes and differences of opinion run high. Dear Future Me on Pop Candy
I just found out that the HOW book Dear Future Me got a mention late last week on USA Today's pop culture blog, Pop Candy. Here's what blogger Whitney Matheson had to say: But one thing I'm also reading is this cool book called Dear Future Me: Hopes, Fears, Secrets, Resolutions (F+W Publications, $16.99). It's a compilation of letters to FutureMe.org,
where you can go and submit and e-mail that will be sent to you
sometime in the future. The letters are funny, poignant, revealing,
heartbreaking ... I think fans of Found and PostSecret might get into it.
