Parking Tickets
I could have really used these parking tickets from Shinebox Print yesterday. And could you even get mad if someone left such a nicely designed reminder on your windshield? Well, maybe you could. But you're probably a jerk. Who taught you to park that way in the first place? Posted by Megan Just for Fun

Another Movie About Graphic Design
Died Young Stayed Pretty: A Movie About Rock Posters opens next weekend at the Montreal World Film Festival. The film peels back the paper curtain and looks behind the scenes of the underground poster movement. These graphic banditos roam the streets, plastering their work to every available surface. Under the guise of advertising rock shows, these unheralded masters of the silkscreen and xerox machine carry on public discourses on the merits and pitfalls of fried cheese and gritty porn.
The film includes posters by Art Chantry, Methane Studios, Seripop, the Ames Bros. and more. Posted by Megan Industry News

Yearbook Yourself
This cracks me up (in a good way): To drive more teens and their parents into its malls for back-to-school shopping, Taubman Centers is taking them back in time. The national mall owner and operator partnered with Colle+McVoy to create an innovative online and in-center experience that allows teens to see what they might have looked like when their parents were in school, all while catching up on current back-to-school fashions.
The campaign features a new website, www.YearbookYourself.com, which launched this week and allows visitors to upload their photos and morph their faces onto yearbook photos spanning five decades. They can easily move from the 1950s through the 1990s and see themselves with the hair and fashion styles of the times while listening to music inspired by that era.

Newsweek Features HOW Book, Written On The City
Newsweek just posted a small gallery of images from Written on the City, a new HOW book exploring message graffiti around the world. The colorful images capture street type at its most raw and inspiring. It makes city governments cringe. But graffiti can be provocative,
inspiring and poetic—sometimes even a tool for public discourse. That's
what San Francisco designers Axel Albin
and Josh Kamler say in their new book, "Written on the City." They've
compiled their favorite "message graffiti" from cities around the
globe—the musings, rants, political statements and cultural
observations of artists who risk jail to have their voices heard.
See more graffiti here. Posted by Megan HOW Books | Typography

Post-Vacation Blues
It’s hard to imagine, but with Labor Day right around the corner,
summer is nearing its end. If you’re planning a getaway to enjoy the
final days of warm weather, chances are it’s not leaving the office
that you find most difficult, it’s returning. In a survey by The
Creative Group, one in three (33%) advertising and marketing executives
polled said they dread the work awaiting their return. Another 10% said
they prevent this scenario by rarely going on vacations. Here are steps
you can take to ensure you’re productive instead of panic-stricken when
you get back. Read more.Posted by Megan HOW Magazine

Going to Austin
I'm a huge fan of Austin, so I'm super psyched that HOW's Mind Your Own Business conference is heading there this fall. If you run a design firm, you should make the trip, too (and sign up this week, as our $100-off discount registration offer ends Friday!). In addition to the amazing resort location for this year's MYOB, we've boosted the program with special sessions targeting large and small firms, and also focused breakout sessions led by veteran design-firm principals with advice to share. We're also encouraging principals to stay through Sunday (after the formal program ends Saturday night) to take advantage of optional working time, software user groups and more. Posted by Bryn

Monday News
On this lovely, sunny Monday morning, a few bits of design-industry news for you: • Strathmore announced the Q2 winners of its quartly Letterhead Contest. Zync Communications picked up a gold for its Bretenic Limited identity (printing by Springfield Graphics); MasonBaronet captured a silver for its Goranson Bain system (printing by Millet the Printer); and Silver Lining Design scored the bronze award for its stationery for Trisha Leavitt (printing by ArtCraft Co.). All winners were produced on Strathmore Writing Wove. Strathmore is accepting entries for the third quarter through September 30. • Workamajig announced the forthcoming upgrade to its project-management software for ad agencies and design studios; the late-August release will include improved support for Mac OSX Leopard and will allow users to create and manage project timelines by dragging and dropping tasks in graphical Gantt Charts. • Quark has established a Virtual Knowledge Base to provide 24/7 self-service tech support to users of its page-layout software. The program includes two tools: an online knowledge base with FAQs and commonly encountered problems and a self-service portal, an online customer-service function. • Wacom has opened the Pen Collective, where designers and artists can share their work and their love of the digital drawing tool. • A new promo for Wausau Paper's Royal lines gives a fictional company a "wardrobe makeover" to show different design approaches to corporate identity. The "Redefining Identity" demonstrates how perception of a business changes based on the colors and textures of its collateral. • Canon announced two additions to its Pixma line of all-in-one printers, which combine scanning, copying and photo-quality printing, and three new products in its Canoscan line of desktop color scanners. A Legend Shrinks
We're sort of bummed out by this: Rolling Stone in October will shrink its trim size, going from 10 x 11 3/4 inches to the 8x11-ish size favored by most newsstand magazines. While the magazine's circulation is up overall, its newsstand sales are slowing, a fact that publisher Wenner Media attributes to its non-standard dimension (making bookstore display more difficult). Blu Dot Designs For Herman Miller
Blu Dot was was one of four design companies Herman Miller asked to create new products for their Lifework Portfolio. Our focus was on storage, and when we began the project, we were struck by the lack of options that "feel" residential. Most filing solutions had a strong "office DNA." Our approach was to borrow a residential typology (in this case a blanket chest) and re-purpose it to accommodate the variety of things you would need to store in a typical home office. In addition to the storage options, an upholstered seat provides a place for an unexpected visitor to take a seat and the hard surface on top provides an additional spot for a peripheral like a printer or fax machine.
