How To Get A Crappy Logo

Offer a $320 "award" to anyone who can please you with their "design" of your logo. Oh, you'll get lots to choose from, but do would really want any of them? (Bad logos make my stomach hurt. Really!)

Oh James Victore
I just can't stop loving you and your boldly confident lines. Now you've created hand-painted collectible plates perfect for display on the walls of ironic homes across America. How could you make me want something I really can't afford?

Design Crush

OK, I am now officially obsessed with designer Jennifer Daniel and her stunning one-page portfolio. She seems weird in the best way possible. How have I not run across her before?

When Online & Offline Blur

Here at HOW HQ, the monthly Trendwatching report is a must-read. The edition that arrived today describes what the Trendwatching gurus are calling "OFF = ON." (Subscribe to this interesting resource here.) It outlines the increasingly blurry line between the worlds that exist onscreen and in reality, focusing on 10 different trends. Of note:

• Online symbols turned real-world objects, like jewelry fashioned from plastic bits in a pixellated arrangement (sold out on ModCloth) and designer Jana Brevick's rings made of computer parts.

• What Trendwatching calls "digital lifestyle lubricants"—products designed to ease your online activities, like YouTube and Flickr-compatible digicams that let you download images straight to the web.

• Online products going "bricks-and-mortar," like the Threadless retail store in Chicago.

We recommend a subscription to the Trendwatching newsletter.

CFC Yearbook

Chicago-based freelancer Ian Arsenault graciously volunteered last week to shoot Day 3 of the Creative Freelancer Conference. Good thing, because my average photo skills plus the hotel's wonky lighting meant my own snaps were less than stellar. Ian shared his pics, which you can find on his Facebook page (friend him first, if you haven't already).
