The Stakeholder Vs. The Shareholder

John Moore, a past In-HOWse Designer Conference speaker, recently linked to a Time interview with the founders of Whole Food Market and The Container Store (who just happened to live together for a year while they were in college). What's interesting about it, is that the two men share a similar business philosophy, one that is both refreshing and smart.

Mackey: I think perhaps accidentally we hit almost simultaneously upon the philosophy that I think will be the dominant philosophy in business in the 21st century. And it's this principle of the stakeholder--that the purpose of business is not primarily to maximize shareholder value, that that's a myth.

Tindell: Milton Friedman said it was the only reason for the enterprise to go ahead.

Mackey: But I've met very few entrepreneurs who created their businesses for that purpose. What Kip and I both realized is that if you manage the business on behalf of all of these interconnected stakeholders--the customers, the team members/employees, the suppliers, the investors, the greater community, the environment--that if you create value for all of them, they're all interdependent. And that that will create the most successful business.

Logo Designer Gets Last Laugh

Though he was only paid £50 in 1970 for the Rolling Stones logo, British designer John Pasche just scored £50,000 for his original drawing of the logo from the Victoria & Albert Museum. (Get all the details in this article in the Guardian.)

(Thanks for the heads up, Julia!)

How To Get A Crappy Logo

Offer a $320 "award" to anyone who can please you with their "design" of your logo. Oh, you'll get lots to choose from, but do would really want any of them? (Bad logos make my stomach hurt. Really!)

Oh James Victore
I just can't stop loving you and your boldly confident lines. Now you've created hand-painted collectible plates perfect for display on the walls of ironic homes across America. How could you make me want something I really can't afford?

When Online & Offline Blur

Here at HOW HQ, the monthly Trendwatching report is a must-read. The edition that arrived today describes what the Trendwatching gurus are calling "OFF = ON." (Subscribe to this interesting resource here.) It outlines the increasingly blurry line between the worlds that exist onscreen and in reality, focusing on 10 different trends. Of note:

• Online symbols turned real-world objects, like jewelry fashioned from plastic bits in a pixellated arrangement (sold out on ModCloth) and designer Jana Brevick's rings made of computer parts.

• What Trendwatching calls "digital lifestyle lubricants"—products designed to ease your online activities, like YouTube and Flickr-compatible digicams that let you download images straight to the web.

• Online products going "bricks-and-mortar," like the Threadless retail store in Chicago.

We recommend a subscription to the Trendwatching newsletter.
