A Freelance Revolution

A week after the Creative Freelancer Conference wrapped, and we're still getting amazing stories from attendees who are rethinking the way they do business. You'll find a whole list of links to photos (including the one below by Nicholas Nawroth) and posts on the CFC Blog, but the story that rocked my world today came from freelance writer Sarah Daly, who wrote to say that she walked into a client meeting last week armed with renewed confidence in her work and her fees—and she landed a brand-new gig! Seriously, we can't make this stuff up.

Alphabunnies Poster

The London-based design firm Airside has just created Alphabunnies, an amusing take on the alphabet. It is hand screen-printed on high-grade 216g Astrolux paper. Limited edition of 100 with each print signed and numbered by the designer. Some of letters might be NSFW, depening on where you work, but the "A" is just cute.

Hot Wings & Politics

Brian Collins shared a project that made a splash during the two political conventions in Denver and St. Paul: CNN Grill, a smart take on your typical neighborhood sports bar, with big screens showing convention speeches instead of football games. CNN reporters and political figures made appearances, and the grill proved a fave among notebook/laptop-toting political scribes and bloggers (an AdAge report lauds the Charge Wall, where folks could use the free cell phones and laptops available or power up their own gadgets).

We loved how Collins described the project:
This new restaurant / broadcast studio hybrid opened at both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions as a haven for finger licking and politicking.

The Stakeholder Vs. The Shareholder

John Moore, a past In-HOWse Designer Conference speaker, recently linked to a Time interview with the founders of Whole Food Market and The Container Store (who just happened to live together for a year while they were in college). What's interesting about it, is that the two men share a similar business philosophy, one that is both refreshing and smart.

Mackey: I think perhaps accidentally we hit almost simultaneously upon the philosophy that I think will be the dominant philosophy in business in the 21st century. And it's this principle of the stakeholder--that the purpose of business is not primarily to maximize shareholder value, that that's a myth.

Tindell: Milton Friedman said it was the only reason for the enterprise to go ahead.

Mackey: But I've met very few entrepreneurs who created their businesses for that purpose. What Kip and I both realized is that if you manage the business on behalf of all of these interconnected stakeholders--the customers, the team members/employees, the suppliers, the investors, the greater community, the environment--that if you create value for all of them, they're all interdependent. And that that will create the most successful business.

Logo Designer Gets Last Laugh

Though he was only paid £50 in 1970 for the Rolling Stones logo, British designer John Pasche just scored £50,000 for his original drawing of the logo from the Victoria & Albert Museum. (Get all the details in this article in the Guardian.)

(Thanks for the heads up, Julia!)
