Collaboration
Change Order has a great post on why you should learn to work collaboratively. 2. Collaborative making is a sign of maturity in your portfolio.
I respect nothing more than seeing a designer's portfolio stuffed with
killer creative work, chased by a presentation where the designer talks
about how they brought the unique strengths of each team member to bear
on the work. The designer carries the vision, while the team supports
it. Such a designer can become a leader.

Cheap, the New Luxe
Interesting article on NYTimes.com today about how marketers (and their advertising and design agencies) are taking their messages down a few notches on the luxury scale. From shooting commercials in less-glamorous locations (a middle-class home, not a mansion) to including pricetags on featured items, to dropping coupons into print advertising, seems like everyone's promoting value over extravagance these days. Are your clients taking the same approach? Weigh in on the HOW forum about the trends you're seeing. Industry News

Advertising Everywhere
I've always thought of ubiquitous advertising as a problem of the modern age, but apparently companies have been doing it for a long time as these turn-of-the-century envelopes show. Posted by Megan Thought Provoking

Friday Design News
Scoop from around the design world to share with you on this Friday: • The Art Directors Club and Idealist, a clearinghouse and website for nonprofit organizations, have teamed up on DesignismConnects.org. The new site connects creative professionals with nonprofits that need their services. Creatives can match their skills to causes they believe in; both sides of the equation post profiles and users can search to find partnerships they'd like to pursue. Organizations like Crime Stoppers of Mid Michigan, Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley and Evergreen4Kids have posted projects ranging from TV public service announcements to website design. As the year winds down and you're looking for a cause to support, look to DesignismConnects.org (and maybe even get your clients involved, too). • Neenah has updated its flagship CLASSIC CREST brand with new colors, sizes and weights; the entire portfolio is also FSC certified and manufactured carbon-neutral and with renewable energy. A new swatchbook is available. • Noted design educator Roland Young joins the faculty of Academy of Art University in San Francisco beginning in January. The veteran teacher was hailed by the school's graphic design chair, Mary Scott, as "inspirational and brilliant." Posted by Bryn

I Just Had to Post This
OK, so at the first Creative Freelancer Conference back in August, I met designer Kristin Bowen, a solopreneur who has a thriving side business called DogHouse Custom Pet Portraits. If you've met me at one of our HOW events, you probably know of my fondness for our dog, Wrigley. So when Kristin handed me her business card (brilliant networker that she is), I knew immediately that we had to work together on Wrigley's portrait. The proof that I received from Kristin totally made me smile this week, so I thought I'd share (see the photo reference I provided and Kristin's portrait). Dog-lovers, you gotta check out Kristin's work! I totally love it! Illustration | Just for Fun
