Job of the Day

Client Director
Landor Associates

Landor touts the benefits of living in Cincinnati—affordable housing, a big yard, a 10-minute commute, excellent schools, great work-life balance, world-class culture, professional sports (we here at HOW HQ agree with all but the professional sports, which this year are disastrous).

Here's more from the job post:

We are seeking a Client Director who has the experience to help clients achieve business success by building, creating, and revitalizing their brand(s) across all points of touch. In doing so, the Client Director is responsible for building and maintaining long-term client relationships, for earning the role of trusted adviser (both to the client and colleagues), for achieving revenue and profitability targets, and for exhibiting the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethics.

Enjoy the Holiday

For our U.S. friends, enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday this week; for our overseas friends, enjoy the peace and quiet on Thursday and Friday, when your American clients and colleagues won't bother you. The HOW blog will be quiet, too, with the team taking a bit of time off beginning later today. See you next week!

On-the-Cheap Tools for Your Design Biz

Chalk this up as one of those articles we wish we'd published first (it's so very HOW), but Daniel Schutzsmith has posted a piece outlining all the web-based tools that can help you run your design business. From e-mail to project management, there are a bunch of free or low-cost online programs. Nice.

Recycled

Can't believe no one thought of this before now ... Earth911.com is an easy way to find recycling options near you for all kinds of items from your home or office, from leftover paint, to the old TV you had in college, to inkjet cartridges. Enter your ZIP code and the item you want to get rid of, and the site shows you options -- not just recycling centers but also organizations like Goodwill that accept donated goods. The site's design and UI are great, too -- once you enter your ZIP code, any page you visit will automatically show related links near you. And it offers up related articles about making smart usage of the things you own.

Art by Hand

If you're like us and just killing time in the office this week before we dive into the feast on Thanksgiving Day, here's a fun way to while away the pre-dinner hours (and relive your elementary school art class, to boot). Our friends at Rule29 are holding a little contest: download the hand template, decorate it to resemble a turkey, and then submit it to their 'fridge. They're giving away an iTunes gift card to the most fabulous entry.

Holiday Crafting

At HOW HQ, we share office space with book and magazine editors who work on titles related to all manner of crafting. And we've watched as a) the craft market goes more upscale and b) the design field gets more into handmade and hand-embellished work.

So in that spirit of design-meets-craft, one of today's Design*Sponge posts caught our eye: An advent calendar project with gorgeous typography that could be easily adapted for all manner of holidays. The artist, Denise Sharp, has an online shop and a blog with all kinds of yummy visual inspiration.
