For Animal Lovers
Design*Sponge offers a great sneak peek into illustrator Frank Viva's home in Toronto. My favorite thing in the space is a typographic poster with a quote from George Orwell's "Animal Farm." Happily, it's for sale from Whigby for $24.99. Show your literary side and demonstrate your
kinship and solidarity with animal kind the world over. Two Legs Bad
(Four Legs Good) was created by Frank Viva and is hand silkscreened for
Whigby on Skin, a brand of luxurious printing papers from the Curious
Collection.

In Praise Of Doodling
I have a reputation as an unrepentant doodler. I doodle my way through every meeting and every long phone call. Many of the designers I know share this habit. Well, turns out, doodling actually aids memory. In a delightful new study, which will be published in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology, psychologist Jackie Andrade
of the University of Plymouth in southern England showed that doodlers
actually remember more than nondoodlers when asked to retain tediously
delivered information, like, say, during a boring meeting or a lecture.

Finding the Silver Lining
HOW aims to collect and share resources to help designers survive --
even thrive -- in 2009. We'll spotlight articles and links here in the
blog, and we invite you to share your own tips in the comments section.
It's right here, and we'll see it if we put on those special glasses that allow us to see beyond this week's headlines and our financial statements: opportunity. Here's some advice from and for designers on seizing that opportunity: • A three-part plan for dealing with a sucky economy: make smart decisions, focus, pursue what matters. • Experts say dropping the price for your design services should absolutely be a last resort. Here's how to avoid discounts, and how to do it smartly if you must. • Peleg Top, Steven Morris, Petrula Vrontikis, John Travis and Michael
Hodgson recently shared their advice and expertise. A major topic of discussion: how the economy will affect the
design industry, and the steps these veterans are taking to thrive
during lean times. Here's video of that conversation.
• Do you manage a creative team? Rise to the challenge with these tips on leadership through change and uncertainty. Design Resources

Red Vs. Blue
We all have our colour preferences, but two Canadian researchers argue all colours are not of the same value. The colour blue inspires creativity while the colour red improves
attention to detail, they report in a study published online by the journal Science. Ravi Mehta and Rui Zhu of the University of British Columbia say
their conclusions could have a wide range of implications for daily
life, from the use of colour in educational settings to its use on
street signs or warning labels. The scientists undertook the 18-month study to resolve conflicting
theories on the effects of red and blue on people's performance.
