Fifteen Free Fonts

Smashing Magazine identifies 15 free fonts that don't suck.
Every now and again we take a look around, select “fresh” high-quality free fonts and present them to you in a brief overview. The choice is enormous, so the time you need to find them is usually the time you should be investing in your current projects. We search for them and we find them, so you don’t have to.

Vintage + Type + Garden = Lovely

I'm an avid gardener who compulsively tags every plant with zinc or wooden labels, and this totally caught my eye on design*sponge this morning. Allison Cecil creates these custom markers from vintage silverware and sells them via her Monkeys Always Look shop on Etsy. Only 8 bucks! Want!

Our Type of Skateboard

If we were into skateboarding (really, we're just a bit too uncoordinated for it), we'd be riding this baby. NYC designer Antonio Carusone collaborated with Buddy Carr Skateboards on a limited-edition project. See more at Carusone's AisleOne site, and more pix on Flickr. Only 100 are being made, and they should be available in June.

Test Your Knowledge of Design History

Friends of HOW Bryony Gomez-Palacio and Armin Vit, newly moved to Austin, TX, are joining us at the HOW Conference as hosts of a new event designed to test how well you paid attention in art history.

They're celebrating the launch of their new book, "Graphic Design Referenced" with Design History and Practice: Mano-a-Mano -- a showdown pitting 16 worthy contestants who'll vie for a free registration to the 2010 HOW Conference. We haven't done anything like this before, but we're pretty certain it'll be great fun.

Go here for more information about the event, and sign up ... if you dare.

Sparkling Illustration

I got a self-promo email this morning from illustrator Jacqui Oakley, so I decided to check out her online portfolio. My favorite thing there is the packaging she did for Cuvée Catharine Rosé Brut from Henry of Pelham. The tube is not only beautiful, it's also designed to keep the wine cold for up to 4 hours and is reusable and recyclable. Plus the wine sounds like it would be really tasty.
A wine with brightness, acidity, fine floral aromas and fruit aromas of apple, citrus and apricot by the Chardonnay with notes of strawberry and blackberry along with a delicious roundness on the palate from the Pinot Noir.

Delicious Design

Last night, Korn Design, a brand strategy and design firm with offices in Boston and New York, won the 2009 James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant Graphics for its branding campaign for The Corner Office Restaurant + Martini Bar in Denver, Colorado.
Korn Design’s spirited branding for The Corner Office plays off the juxtaposition of work and play. The brand experience entices guests, offering everything that a day at the office does not—good times, great cocktails and outstanding food. Featuring slinky photography, energetic colors, and amusing copy, the print collateral creates a visual playground. The environment includes signature supergraphics, rubberband-wall art features, photographic restroom doors, and a 35 foot tall exterior sign serving as a beacon to all.
