Touching Project

FOH Steve Hartman let us know today of a collaborative project that teamed Justin Ahrens, Donovan Beery, Nate Voss, Christine Taylor and Steve himself. The group descended on Omaha, home of Beery and Voss's Reflex Blue design podcast, for a weekend of design. They created this letterpress poster as a fundraiser for Life in Abundance, a nonprofit that helps empower Africa's poor. (Dig the blind emboss, which reads, "Touch. One touch creates a lasting imprint of an abundance of lives.") More info on the project on Steve's blog; you can buy a poster and support the cause here.

Just Say No

We featured the fun Alphabet Bags from the U.K. in HOW's April issue; now we've spotted the company's latest tongue in cheek product. Give the economy the middle finger in cute, typographical style, and at a recession-friendly price, too.

Build Like the Master

A link on Design Observer this morning pointed us to news that LEGO's Architecture brand (who knew? how cool!) has teamed up with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Brickstructures Inc., which helped develop the architecture line, on a new licensed series. First up: Fallingwater and the Guggenheim. Wow.

Sneak Preview of Creative Freelancer Conference

Maybe you're thinking of attending the second Creative Freelancer Conference in San Diego from August 26 to 28. But maybe you're a bit on the fence. Ilise Benun, a longtime marketing advisor to creative freelancers and, along with Peleg Top, one of HOW's partners in this new event, offers a sneak preview of what you can expect to get out of your experience, along with interviews with attendees at last year's conference.

Ilise says: "We've planned two and a half days of hands-on learning and useful, time-saving resources with plenty of time to network with peers and with the speakers."

Check out the video, and start making plans to join us in San Diego.

Care And Feeding Of In-House Designers
Design guru Jeff Fisher shares a great list of 10 tips to keep in-house designers happy and creative.
We often hear horror stories of bosses who make the life of a staff designer miserable. Such situations make creativity and productivity very difficult, if not impossible. Years ago, while I was the art director of the Multnomah County Medical Society in Portland, I had the most incredible supervisor I have ever experienced. She respected her staff, didn't stifle the day-to-day operations of the publications design department with micro-management, and constantly rewarded and thanked staff members for jobs well done.

Old Bag

Designer Wendy Harrison started Letterfest to celebrate her love for type and unique gifts and housewares. Her "Old Bag" shopper is funny, but totally useful.
Head down the shops with this eco-chic typography bag. I’ve hand-drawn the letters and screen printed them on a lightweight cotton bag. Natural cream fabric, dark pink lettering – the print is on both sides.

The bag is approximately 16" × 16", with 18" handles. Can easily fold up to fit in a pocket or handbag when you’re out and about.

Tuesday Type Treat

The latest useful face from Hoefler & Frere-Jones is a juicy slab serif called Sentinel.
Sentinel was designed to address the many shortcomings of the classical slab serif. Unbound by traditions that deny italics, by technologies that limit its design, or by ornamental details that restrict its range of weights, Sentinel is a fresh take on this useful and lovely style, offering for the first time a complete family that’s serviceable for both text and display.
