Hip to be Square

Over my Sunday morning coffee, I spotted the New York Times' review of the new Nissan Cube (a competitor to the Scion xB), and then saw Core77's post about it this morning. I'm digging the boxy shape, the cool wraparound rear window and the accessory-packed interior. (Lord knows, it must have better cupholders than the industrial-design disasters in my otherwise-beloved Jetta wagon.) More on the 2009 model on the official Cube website.

An Ideal Collaboration

Wow, talk about the perfect meshing of aesthetics: Hatch Show Print, which we've spotlighted many times in the magazine and at the HOW Conference, created several typographic compositions for Anthropologie's June catalog. Now THAT's a mailing list we wish we were on.

Even better, all the fashion photography was shot on location in Austin, which has us very psyched for our visit to that fantastic city later this month for the conference.

REM Type

TypeTrust just announced the release of the REM Collection, three fonts designed by Michael Stipe and Chris Bilheimer and engineered by Neil Summerour.

ORANGE
Michael Stipe bought an orange plastic stencil to begin a project in which he stenciled on a shirt every city he visited that year. After stenciling the alphabet on many types of paper and fabrics, they and Chris turned the finished letters into this font .

TOURFONT
This font was created for REM's 2003 Tour by making a standard stencil font, then reattaching the bridges.

ACCELERATE
Accelerate was created for REM's 2007 album Accelerate. The goal was to make a font as bold as the band's new material, boldness on the edge of losing form.

Battle of the Brands

Recently, the nation's two largest discount retailers unveiled new looks for their store brands. Not surprising--the economy is turning more consumers to "generic" brands, and retailers are getting much smarter about packaging and positioning their house lines. (Our contact at Cincinnati-based branding agency LPK recently told us they're taking the package-design work they've long done for P&G to grocery chains looking to freshen up their own goods.)

TheDieLine.com has covered Walmart's Great Value packaging, while BrandNew has featured Target's Up and Up line. Both brands seemed to take a cue from Publix, whose phenomenally well-designed store goods revel in whitespace. (We'd argue that Publix does it much better.)

Take a look at the re-dos, then share your impressions on the HOW Forum.
