Affordable Art

James Jean, one of my all-time fave illustrators, just got an advance copy of his new book from Chronicle. You can watch a video of him flipping through the pages. What makes the project super cool is that it includes 12 pull-out posters bound into a paperback portfolio and features a full-color painting on one side and intricate sketches on the opposite side.

Paper Craft

We've noticed a recent increased interest in making objects from paper. We collected a group of awesome paper toys in Urban Paper, which just came out. And another collection of paper goodies will be published early next year in a book called Papercuts. The fab German publisher Gestalten is releasing a book called Papercraft this fall that looks like a stunning collection of different kinds of paper art and design.

Brainstormer

The Brainstormer is a clever Flash app developed by illustrator Andrew Bosley. It's perfect for time you get stuck and just need to come up with an original idea. Spin the wheel and get inspiring word combinations like:

Benefaction - Steampunk - Celler
Vengence for a Crime -  Enlightened - Fishing Boat
Self-Preservation - Wild West - Cannon

Little Snapper

Designer Samantha Warren just shared an awesome new tool for collecting visual inspiration on her blog. She's using LittleSnapper to keep track of and organize all the cool things she finds online.
There are two factors that make LittleSnapper the solution for me:

It seamlessly integrates into my work flow.
I have the icon in my dock, when I see something I snap it. It provides fields for all the information that makes that “snap” useful to me. There is a field for the web address, description, and descriptive tags. I hardly have to go out of my way to document a really cool piece of design. My only suggestion for improvement here would be a tag suggestion feature… its hard to remember if I am using the tag “Packaging” vs “Package Design” when I am in a hurry.

It has an online gallery component that creates an RSS feed.
While I could set little snapper up to integrate with my Flickr account, personally I want to keep my Flickr for photos and personal design pieces, and have a separate area just for inspirational work of other designers. Having it online is essential for me because I may want to pull it up in a pinch to show clients or students and I would also like to share it with you guys. The fact that an RSS feed is generated adds a whole other component to it that I would like to play with further. Eventually  I would like to pull the RSS feed to my blog to display selected pieces of inspiration.

Sniper Vs. Shotgun

To explain their design process, Atlanta-based Matchstic recently created a PDF showing the difference between a shotgun and sniper approach to branding. The basic differences are:

The Shotgun:
• SHOT QUICKLY WITHOUT MUCH PLANNING
• RELEASES WIDE SPREAD OF PELLETS, HOPING FOR A HIT
• THE LEARNING CURVE IS LOW, EASY TO START SHOOTING
• THERE CAN BE COLLATERAL DAMAGE
• PRODUCES SOME SUCCESS, SOME OF THE TIME

The Sniper:
• MUCH TIME SPENT PLANNING AND SETTING UP THE SHOT
• TAKES ONE SHOT TO HIT THE TARGET
• THE LEARNING CURVE IS HIGH, REQUIRES PRACTICE
• THERE IS A LOW RANGE OF ERROR
• VERY FEW PEOPLE BECOME SNIPERS

Which do you think is more effective?
