Nature Lab

This is one of the most visually inspiring things I've ever seen: Etsy recently made a video tour of the Rhode Island School of Design's Nature Lab, an amazing collection of specimens from the plant and animal kingdoms.
Walking into RISD's Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab is an awe-inspiring experience. From the images that I had seen online, I was somewhat prepared for what to expect when I went to shoot this video, but like many that enter the Nature Lab for the first time, I did not anticipate being able to open the cupboards myself, and pull out anything I wanted to look at. The visceral experience of touching a lobster claw that is larger than your own arm is truly a profound thing.

Wood Type

Fine font purveyor T-26 is offering Wood Type Impressions Volume 1 & 2 for the discounted price of $449.
The two DVD Volumes contain over 500 high-resolution grayscale TIFF images, suitable for use in any image editing program, such as Adobe Photoshop.

Each image set has been hand-printed on a relief proofing press in a progressive dark-to-light series using textured printmaking paper. Many sets also include experimental alternates (distressed, scratched, or solvent spritzed prints).

These are NOT keyable fonts, they are raster images. Each letterform or shape will need to be hand set and composed... just as is intended with real Wood Type!

Film Preview at CFC

If you're joining us for the Creative Freelancer Conference at the end of this month (and you should, if you're a creative freelancer), you'll get a sneak peek at an upcoming documentary called "Shine." This "big film about small business" is being produced by Biznik.com and is due out in 2010. The Biznik folks are bringing a preview screening to CFC in San Diego, with never-before-seen clips and outtakes. The film is co-directed by Dan McComb and Ben Medina -- it tells the unheralded stories of entrepreneurs struggling to build the businesses of their dreams (kinda like you, huh?).

Watch the trailers + read the press release here.

And learn more about the rest of the Creative Freelancer Conference program.

Creatives Are Funny

Business Guys on Business Trips, a webcomic that skewers the world of advertising and big agency design, made me giggle. You're sure to find one that reminds you of a particularly annoying former creative director or coworker.

The deadline has been extended until Friday, Aug. 14, if you're interested. He's looking for examples of design work to include in the book that address nonprofits, political causes, social justices, the arts, education, or anything self-initiated that supports the greater good.
