Illustration Advice

Scott Francis, who recently edited an upcoming HOW book about freelance illustration, sat down with author/illustrator Holly DeWolf to talk about the business.

Q. Your book is targeted to illustrators, but you wear a lot of hats—being a writer, for example. I think anyone who is creative could take something away from your book. What’s your view on the crossover between different creative occupations (for example, writing and illustration)?

A. I truly believe that creatives are good at many things. We usually have one or two major talents and some hidden talents that do not always surface right away. A job could require us to write something or create something in a different manner. This discovery can be an asset. Use it!

It’s like being a Jack & Jill of many skills but we are actually good at it. This flexibility is good to have in our economic climate. Our many talents can add new life to our career, fill in an income void and shake things up. In my book I talk about tackling unconventional markets. There are many options to your career if you need a change or more revenue. To me its like the ripple effect-you may be a top notch illustrator but you could be a whiz at words that could lead to children’s books or other hidden possibilities.

Video on Paper

After last year's Esquire e-ink experiment (which drew a loud yawn, including from this very loyal reader) comes a joint promo with CBS and Pepsi that again puts digital messaging on paper. CBS is offering a 40-minute video preview of its upcoming fall shows (plus some ads from Pepsi) on a cardboard-thin video screen embedded in an ad page in next month's Entertainment Weekly. Read about the gimmick, er, promotion here.

Brooklyn Fare

Mucca Design is known for its masterful use of type. Their latest creation, the identity for a full-service, gourmet market in Brooklyn, is no exception.
Brooklyn Fare required a comprehensive identity system to communicate the store's diverse offerings. The identity expresses the market's high standard of service and quality, and its commitment to serving the local community. The brand is simple: Four colors, one custom typeface, and lots of witty and original copy. Used as large fields, the four colors create visual resting places in an otherwise bustling store.

The Pleasure of Correspondence

I found this project totally charming: In April, Lenka Clayton and Michael Crowe mailed handwritten letters out of the blue to all 460-some households in a small Irish town. Some notes were jotted on found paper, others on stationery. They've documented it in Mysterious Letters.

Many of the notes expressed lovely sentiments, like an appreciation for "all the things you do that no one noticed" or best wishes for a beautiful day. All were signed, "with love."
