Photos Reimagined

British photographer Mike Stimpson has quite the following, thanks to his re-creations of iconic photos (think: guy in front of tanks on Tienanmen Square) in ... Legos. Brilliant! See a gallery on The Daily Beast, then check out Stimpson's portfolio.

Pentagram Is Down With Guitar Hero?!

Michael Bierut totally rocked the new Guitar Hero identity, which includes a custom typeface.
After considering changes that ranged from imperceptible to unrecognizable, Pentagram redrew the original Guitar Hero logotype, adjusting some of its more aggressively odd features to enable accurate reproduction at a variety of scales and in media from digital animations to temporary (or permanent) tattoos. In addition, the new logotype serves as a basis of an extendable system, unifying the presentation of Guitar Hero, Band Hero, and DJ Hero in a consistent brand architecture.

Project Team: Michael Bierut, partner-in-charge; Joe Marianek, designer. Hero font designed by Kai Salmela.

Logo Master

Your logo-design education will not be complete until you study the work of Bulgarian designer Stefan Kanchev (1915-2001). His logos hold up extremely well over time and will blow your mind.
During his prolific career he designed hundreds of logos, posters, stamps, book covers, labels as well as graphics for TV. Much of his work is inspired by Bulgarian folklore and traditions. In 1994 Stefan Kanchev was recognized as one of the top ten designers of trade marks in the world along with Paul Rand, Saul Bass and etc. The title was awarded by the International trademark centre in Ostend, Belgium.

Big Agency = Bad Spec Work

Ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky has recently come under fire for "crowdsourcing" a logo for a new client.
To create a logo for the electric motorcycle start-up Brammo, they're crowdsourcing the design, for a reward of $1000. The winner will be announced in six days, and over 700 people have submitted work. But no matter: To many professional designers, so-called "spec" assignments--that is, exploratory work, done for free--is taboo. Many designers think it undercuts them, and denigrates the profession. Designis.ms was among the aggrieved, and they've started a Twitter campaign (#nospec) against Crispin.
