News of the Day
Big news week in the design world, it seems -- here are the latest headlines:
• Shutterstock this morning announced that it has acquired BigStockPhoto, another major royalty-free stock image source. Shutterstock, which offers buyers a subscription-based service, adds 3.4 million images from BigStockPhoto, which are available on a credit-type service.
(What's the difference? Honestly, we had to ask. Subscriptions allow designers to buy a set number of images over time, regardless of their size. The credit system lets designers buy "credits" that they can apply toward purchasing an image; bigger images = more credits. Get it?)
The two brands will remain separate under the Shutterstock umbrella.
• Mohawk Fine Papers yesterday announced the winners of its 10th annual Mohawk Show, judged by Ellen Lupton, Bill Drenttel, Alice Chung and Jessica Helfand. The five Best of Show winners, who receive $5,000 each: Lipman—23 East 22nd Street: OMA/Rem Koolhaas Presentation Kit WAX—CSPD 2008 Annual Report The Glass House—AR 2007-Children’s Medical Research ALT Design—Otis College of Art and Design Graduate Viewbook Teddy Bear Holding, Inc.—Unwrapped: Not Usual Gift Ideas
• The boutique stock photo site StevenVoteStock.com launched yesterday with advertising and editorial images.
