Zombies In The News
HOW Books author Ryan Mecum was recently quoted in the Cincinnati Enquirer thanks to his status as a zombie "expert."
"It's no coincidence that zombies are at their most popular the same
time as much of the world is currently terrified of a possible superflu
outbreak," says 34-year-old Ryan Mecum of Madeira, author of "Zombie
Haiku: Good Poetry for Your...Brains" and his newest, "Vampire Haiku"
(both published by How Books, $9.99). "Zombies stories are fun ways for us to wrestle with our genuine fears of our world soon coming to an end." Rock on, Ryan!

Dutch Design
I'm enchanted by the work of Dutch designer Christian Borstlap, particularly the stamps he designed for the Netherlands that benefit children. Click on "Stripes for Stamps" to see these illustrations animated.

How to Get Published
If you've browsed the bookstore and seen design books like these ...

... you may have wondered how designers like Maggie Macnab, Joshua Chen, Jeff Fisher and Peleg Top managed to get their books published, or how you can get your work included in a design book like these.
Designer and veteran book author Peleg Top (his forthcoming "Designing for the Greater Good" joins his previous "Designers Guide to Marketing & Pricing" on shelves), is hosting a seminar to help designers get their work published. You'll learn how to submit your work to book editors for consideration in their projects, and also how to pitch your book ideas to publishers.
The session is Thursday, November 5 from 7:00 to 8:30 at the studio of Lime Twig Group in South Pasadena, CA. More info and registration here.

Lovely Lettering
Two things make me love Lisa Ridgely's blog, PenandInk-Journal.com: First, as someone with anal-retentive, second-grade-teacher-ish handwriting, I can only WISH my penmanship was a fraction as nice as hers. Second, since we're putting together a feature on hand lettering for an upcoming issue, I've been totally inspired by handwriting lately.
Ridgely is a Maryland-based calligrapher, and her work is stunning. Plus, she hand-writes her blog entries. How cool is that?
'Scuse me, I need to go practice my writing now ...

Quiet Next Week
The whole HOW gang will be out the week of October 19, first setting up and then joining judges Pum Lefebure, Derek Sussner and Tim Smith as they evaluate several thousand entries in our International Design Awards.
So the blog will be quiet. But we'll be tweeting about the work we're seeing and about the process itself. Be sure to follow HOWbrand on Twitter! And we may post a few photos of the action on our Facebook page.
And in the meantime, check out last year's Best of Show winner.
