Halloween Fun

You'd figure creatives would go all-out with their Halloween costumes, and the folks at Greteman Group in Wichita, KS, are no exception. The staff divided into 3 teams for a costume throwdown. Check out the themes, and then vote for your favorite group. (We kind of like the seasonally appropriate Sickos, but have to give huge props to the Day of the Dead team's awesome costumes.)

Classic Design

Last year, when I first saw a picture of the Penguin cloth-bound classic series illustrated by Coralie Bickford-Smith, I wanted them immediately, and was totally disappointed that they were only available in the U.K. But now, they're being released in the U.S., too. Yay!

Environmental Poster Series

Neenah Paper just released the second in a series of posters celebrating conservation. The first poster, released this summer, is printed on ENVIRONMENT® Papers, PC 100 White and is packed with facts about recycling. The second poster, released in October, highlights water and is printed on CLASSIC® Linen Papers, Recycled 100 Bright White.  The third, due in November, looks at energy and will be printed on CLASSIC COLUMNS® Papers, Recycled Bright White.
“Environmental issues tend to be deadly serious subjects that many treat with a somber tone,” said Steve Sikora, co-owner and creative director/copywriter of Design Guys, the Minneapolis-St. Paul firm who designed the Neenah Wallpaper Poster Series.

Taking the opposite tack, these posters were designed to have maximum visual impact — making the most of a few bits of text and being able to work singly or as a group. Both of those attributes increase the odds they will make their way onto plenty of walls — and stay there.

Seasonal Self-Promo

We look forward every year to a clever self-promo from Milwaukee-based GS Design. This year, they picked Halloween. (Nice choice!) "400 Costumes to Die For" is a pair of 20-sided custom dice that will help you brainstorm an awesome, last-minute costume idea. I just rolled Zombie Elvis, which is actually a pretty great idea.

Zombies In The News

HOW Books author Ryan Mecum was recently quoted in the Cincinnati Enquirer thanks to his status as a zombie "expert."

"It's no coincidence that zombies are at their most popular the same time as much of the world is currently terrified of a possible superflu outbreak," says 34-year-old Ryan Mecum of Madeira, author of "Zombie Haiku: Good Poetry for Your...Brains" and his newest, "Vampire Haiku" (both published by How Books, $9.99). "Zombies stories are fun ways for us to wrestle with our genuine fears of our world soon coming to an end."

Rock on, Ryan!
