Pantone + iPhone

PANTONE is offering simple iPhone or iPod Touch cases in 8 different colors. What's even cooler, is that they can be personalized for free with 2 lines of text and/or a logo. At $19.99, this would make a great gift for your iPhone-toting, designer-color appreciating, creative friends.

Quiet Time

We're on a skeleton crew for Wednesday before the big holiday weekend, so the ol' blog will be quiet tomorrow. In the meantime, here are a few bits of inspiration and eye candy we've recently added to HOWdesign.com to keep you occupied:

• See a collection of design rockstars talking about their favorite-of-all-time projects in our regular feature, My Best Work: Gail Anderson on her high-school doodles, Michael Bierut on a poster handwritten by his daughter, Louise Fili on her love-letter to Italy. From the latest issue of HOW, the talented Michael Osborne shares his best design project:

• Go Behind the Design to scope out a neat project by the VIA Group for their local Salvation Army -- it's all about a great concept and smart execution:

And, if you're killin' time, head over to the HOW Sweepstakes and register to win some cool stuff from our latest issue.

Afternoon Fun

OK, so this is apropos of nothing design-wise, but it's a crappy-weather day here at HOW HQ, and those of us in the office are marking time before our company holiday starts tomorrow at noon. So when someone posted on Facebook this link to the Muppets version of "Bohemian Rhapsody," you can bet I clicked, grinned and had to share. The whole gang makes an appearance, including a sweet jam by Dr. Teeth, Janice, Animal and the band; Statler and Waldorf heckling Fozzie; Beaker and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew; Ralph the Dog on keyboards; even the Mahna-Mahna guy. Oh, how I do love all things Muppet.

This Week's Design News

A bunch of news tidbits have been piling up in our in-boxes recently, including these items:

• Earlier this month, Neenah Paper launched its second app for the iPhone and iTouch, an eco-calculator (previously available as a web tool and BlackBerry app). Type in the amount of paper you estimate for a project, and the Eco-Calculator tabulates the environmental impact of your paper choice, showing water, energy and wood conservation, among other info. Go to the iTunes Store and search for Neenah. Also from Neenah, the mill has created a virtual library of its swatchbooks.

• Marty Neumeier, brand consultant and author of "The Brand Gap" and "Zag" has merged his firm, Neutron, with Liquid Agency, a brand marketing firm with offices in San Jose, CA, and Portland, OR. More scoop on the merger here.

• Call for Entries: HOW's Poster Design Awards and Logo Design Awards are open for submissions until December 1. Don't wait! Send your best work to be judged by the esteemed Steve Hartman and Jeff Fisher, respectively. Entering online is super easy.

Parham Santana had a juicy job: updating the beloved Peanuts brand with a new identity and retail packaging.

Perceptive Visions is a new boutique stock agency.

Artists' Handmade Holiday Greetings

The Smithsonian's Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture has opened a new exhibition of more than 100 holiday cards designed by artists for their personal use. The collection includes seasonal greetings by Alexander Calder, Pablo Cano and other artists from the early- through late-1900s. Some of them are a bit dark, most make no reference to commonplace seasonal imagery, and all of them bear a certain intimacy, as they were one-of-a-kind pieces intended for a specific recipient.

Read about the exhibit here, and see a photo gallery here.

HOW Gets Propped

Shopping for a rack to store your favorite design mags? Check out this beauty from Crate and Barrel. Oh look, it's already holding a copy of HOW. We love Crate and Barrel and are super psyched that they used the mag in a product shot. How cool is that?!

Look Both Ways

More proof of design's influence on business: Debbie Millman's new book Look Both Ways (published by HOW) just got a great review on 800ceoread, a website and blog about business books.
I urge any remotely creative group to order a box of these. It will change the way you think about things, how things work, how things look, what brands mean to us and how they function, and how all this work and business and function and design is not just our jobs, but a part of who we are, how we think, and what effect we can have on the world.
