Geometric Faces

Fontfabric offers a small, but interesting, collection of geometric typefaces. Several are available for free download, including 2 weights of Oval, an aggressively contemporary font family.
Fontfabric is an independent type foundry , which was launched at the close of 2008 by designer Svetoslav Simov who is based in Sofia, Bulgaria. Our goal is to create high-quality fonts which stand in a unique class of their own, and which will serve as a good base for any designer project whether it be web, print, t-shirt design, logo etc.

Designing Local Currency

This is such a cool design school project:
Students in Jason Santa Maria’s Communicating Design class were assigned the task of designing their own local currency. Inspired by Ithaca Hours and BerkShares, students pulled a neighborhood out of a hat, and were asked to research their neighborhood to determine what characteristics should be represented on its currency.

Letterpress Zombies

My friend Claudean, a designer here at F+W Media, sent me a link to the Yee-Haw Industries etsy store and it totally blew me away. You can find T-shirts, cards, calendars, posters and more inspired by and printed with their huge collection of vintage wood type. Of course, my favorite products were all about zombies, like this type-tastic T-shirt:

Noted Design Firm Closes Shop

If you paid ANY attention to the design annuals in the 1990s, you couldn't miss the work of Des Moines, IA-based Sayles Graphic Design. John Sayles' graphic, bold, stylistic work garnered much attention throughout that decade and well into this one. His business partner, Sheree, was a frequent source for HOW on marketing and biz-dev topics, and both of them made more than one appearance at the HOW Design Conference. Our June 2007 issue featured an article about John's extensive collection of enamelware and Sheree's collection of vintage cosmetic compacts.

After nearly 25 years running their studio, the two have shuttered Sayles Graphic Design. They've both found other, more meaningful callings.

Just last week, Sheree shared her impressions of the emotional and business aspects of their decision. Read about the closing of this noted design studio.

Festive Fonts

The Font Bureau has combed through its collection to highlight a few faces that are perfect for the upcoming holidays. Dress up your studio's holiday party invitation, client gifts and seasonal greetings with these novelties ...

Narcissus is based directly on a 1921 German revival of Fournier's celebrated 18th-century ornamented types and conveys an organic charm.

Niagara Engraved, on the other hand, recalls the crisp, elegant, soaring geometry of the early 20th century.

Ironmonger Inlaid may have been originally inspired by wrought iron and perforated steel, but in the right context it can be surprisingly festive.

The Zingha Deco styles apply the engraved technique to more contemporary letterforms, in both upright and swash italic styles.

And Nutcracker is a design unto itself—conceived, as the name implies, especially to express the character of the season.
