The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking an Art Director to develop and maintain the visual and aesthetic identity and standards of the University Press and oversee the recruitment, training, and management of work assigned to professional design staff, interns, and independent contractors. This position provides professional expertise and keeps current with design trends.

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field with a portfolio of at least ten published book cover designs and five published book interior designs. Other required qualifications include: expertise in Adobe Creative Suite for the latest Macintosh OS, especially InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Illustrator; knowledge of design standards for trade books and for specialized scholarly manuscripts; experience in print publishing; ability to prioritize work assignments to produce accurate, detail-oriented work while meeting stringent deadlines; attention to detail; independent decision-making ability that reflects good judgment and discretion; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and proven ability to work in a team environment as well as independently. Preferred qualifications include: experience and awareness of electronic publishing developments and issues; one year of supervisory experience in publishing; broad academic background or evidence of broad intellectual engagement; and strong general computer skills, including the ability to effectively use additional software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Safari.
