Getty Images just released an interesting multimedia visual trend report called The Curve: Technology and Telecommunications.

In a multi-part series, The Curve explores three key themes around the world’s visual transformation and the changing role of photography, powered by the marriage of technology and telecommunications.  The first issue of The Curve centered on social photography is now live, and the second issue, slated to go live in May, will examine connectivity, identity and creativity providing insight on the cloud, content management, the personal information economy and more. The June issue is the final component of The Curve: Technology and Telecommunications, and will analyze content by digesting trends for distinct demographic segments, geographies, education uses and more.

Photography: The Killer App and The Photographic Datascape

Social photography is altering the meaning of photography, and greatly affects how brands have utilized imagery to develop impactful, engaging campaigns. In 2011, 491.4 million smartphones were sold, up 58 percent from the previous year according to Gartner Research thus exponentially boosting the number of phones with instant photo-sharing capabilities. Nicholas Mirzoeff, Professor of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, believes that photography is the ‘killer app’ of web 2.0. Mirzoeff wrote in FOAM magazine that new social sharing of personal photographs heralds a new age of the self-image—“photografitti.” Mirzoeff underlines that photography for creators, consumers, sharers and buyers has become the prime vehicle in social sharing because it’s an expression of self that is the most valued form of connection—the exact reason brands and advertisers look to engage with photo communities such as Flickr.

Adobe Sessions at HOW Design Live

2012 May 8

Want to know what will get a couple thousand graphic designers out of bed at 7:00 or so on a Sunday morning?

A HOW Design Live presentation hosted by Adobe, that’s what. We’re talking 7 a.m., after a night of Boston pub crawls. [Better grab a tall coffee.]

Adobe is presenting three bonus sessions at HOW Design Live in Boston, to give you a sneak peek at their latest tools and technologies. If you want to learn about the newest tools in the designer’s arsenal, there’s no better time or place to be. (Hint: If you’re still trying to convince your boss to send you to HOW, you’ll want to mention this bonus design software training.)

Here’s what’s on the Adobe agenda:

Saturday, June 23, 12:15 p.m.

Design Websites Without Writing Code With Adobe Muse
Adobe senior worldwide design evangelist Rufus Deuchler will present the brand-new Adobe Muse application, which lets designers create and publish HTML websites without writing code. He’ll demo how to create a website from scratch using tools similar to what you’re used to using for print page production. Muse lets creative pros focus on design rather than technology, and it includes the TypeKit web font collection so you can work beyond the standard web fonts. Preview and testing functions let you finesse the design before releasing it to the web.

Sunday, June 24, 7:30 a.m.

Discover Adobe Creative Cloud and See What’s New in Creative Suite 6
Senior worldwide design evangelist Rufus Deuchler will walk you through the company’s new digital hub that lets you download and install every Creative Suite application and uses cloud-based storage to house files for sharing, collaboration and publishing. This morning session is notorious for delivering tons of deep user tricks and tips for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. You’ll also get a walkthrough of Adobe Muse, which allows designers to create HTML websites without writing code.

Sunday, June 25, 12:15 p.m.

Learn to Create a Digital Publication for the iPad Without Writing Code
Designers can seamlessly translate their work for the Apple iPad using InDesign CS6 and Adobe Digital Publishing Suite. You’ll see how to put your existing InDesign skills to use (including new interactive tools in CS6) to create highly interactive content—magazines, books, annual reports, even your own design portfolio—for publication on the iPad. Adobe tools can manage the concept-to-completion workflow and create a branded app that can be distributed or sold via the iTunes store.

Register now for HOW Design Live—if you haven’t already—and mark your calendar with these bonus technology sessions presented by Adobe.

Tuesday Type Treat: Guapa, A Display Font By Laura Meseguer

2012 May 8

Guapa is a lovely serif display font designed by Laura Meseguer. (See more of her work.) It’s available in a single weight but includes alternate characters and other goodies.

It was first born from a personal experiment: transforming a geometric sans serif “à la Futura” into a charming postmodern deco design. It was applied in a poster specially designed for a typography exhibition called Pimp the Type. Later it became a well-suited typeface for the word: from titles for magazines to book & record covers and packaging. The family consists in one single weight, which is provided with Discretionary Ligatures, Alternative Characters, Swashes Forms, Initials and some Stylistic Sets. The Ornaments Series will be designed in the future, as well as a Cyrillic update, developed with the help of Irina Smirnova.
